The Springbank 8 Year Old Local Barley is one of the most anticipated releases from Springbank's annual Local Barley series, an annual limited edition that has become one of the most important moments in the Scottish whisky calendar. Lightly peated and distilled using Springbank's unique two-and-a-half times distillation method, it stands out for its complexity and authenticity. Local barley and the Local Barley philosophy

Springbank reveals with this cuvée a terroir-driven expression, as the barley used comes exclusively from Campbeltown. This 2025 edition is crafted from Bere barley, one of the oldest barley varieties cultivated in the United Kingdom, grown on the farm of High Ranachan, roughly 3 kilometres from the Springbank distillery. Bere inherits Celtic agricultural tradition, and its rusticity and aromatic depth give the spirit a farmhouse character and absolute authenticity that modern varieties cannot replicate. Maturation splits evenly between ex-bourbon casks and ex-Sherry casks. This combination marries the vanilla sweetness and fruited roundness of bourbon wood with the spiced depth and dried fruit notes of Sherry casks, striking a balance that draws the best from both ageing traditions.

Tasting profile

Nose: rich malt with an almost meaty, interesting quality. Pleasantly sulphurous in a rare way. A farmhouse character marked by silage and yeast notes, then more fruited aromas. Baked apple mainly, perhaps a hint of mango. Ozone and wet stone notes. The nose reveals appealing ripe yellow fruit, honey, and malted cereal aromas. Palate: the texture is precise, thick and oily, coating the mouth. Flecks of soot, smoked barley husks, and a characteristic medicinal touch bring remarkable complexity and depth. Bourbon cask influence brings vanilla and ripe fruit notes, while Sherry casks enrich the palate with spiced touches and dried fruit nuance. The result is perfect balance between power and finesse, with a long and satisfying finish.

The distillery

Founded in 1828 by Archibald Mitchell in Campbeltown, Springbank remains one of Scotland's last independent family distilleries, today led by Hedley G. Wright, direct descendant of the founder. From malting to bottling, the entire production process happens on-site, a unique fact in today's Scotland. With Glenfarclas, Springbank is the only Scottish distillery still in the hands of its founding family, the Mitchells. Springbank pursues character over volume. It is a whisky of singular purpose, sought by collectors, purists, and those who value authenticity over convenience.

Tasting and pairing

This 8 Year Old Local Barley is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass at room temperature. A few drops of pure water are advised to tame the 58.1 per cent and let the cereal and fruit notes unfold.
