The Strathisla 9 Year Old 2016 First Fill PX from Signatory Vintage is one of the most sought expressions from their 100 Proof collection, drawn from one of Speyside's most picturesque and oldest working distilleries. Bottled by Signatory Vintage, Scotland's most respected independent bottler, this was distilled at Strathisla in 2016 and matured for 9 years in first fill Pedro Ximénez cask. Released without added colour or chill filtration at a generous strength that reveals the full richness of the spirit. Strathisla remains a flagship Speyside distillery, the historic source for Chivas Regal, and this 100 Proof Edition continues a collection known for its honest quality.
Maturation and origin
Matured exclusively in first fill Pedro Ximénez cask, this single malt marries Strathisla's characteristic floral and fruity roundness with the opulent generosity of Spanish sweet sherry wood. The Pedro Ximénez ageing brings preserved dark fruits, a touch of liquorice and syrupy depth to Speyside's delicate style, balancing the distillery's natural fruity freshness with indulgent sherry richness in an expression young in years yet remarkably complete. Located in Keith at the heart of Speyside, Strathisla is among Scotland's oldest working distilleries, founded in 1786.
Tasting notes
On the nose, preserved red fruits (black cherry, plum and fig) mingle with buttered caramel, dark chocolate and a whisper of gentle spice evoking gingerbread. Beneath these richer layers, subtle floral freshness recalls Strathisla's spring-like character, touched by red apple. A hint of liquorice wood and a trace of leather add further complexity, echoing the Spanish maturation. On the palate, the whisky is dense and enveloping, balancing Pedro Ximénez generosity with preserved fruit vivacity. Dark ripe fruits, toffee, cinnamon and a gentle cocoa bitterness structure the whole. The finish is long and warming, closing with notes of dried fruits and sweet spice.
