Fruity and sherried, with dried fruit, honey and warming spices. A Speyside single malt aged in sherry cask, rich, silky and layered in complexity.
The Glenrothes Sherry Discovery 11 Year Old from Gordon & MacPhail is one of the most approachable and successful releases in the Discovery range, an introductory collection crafted by Scotland's most respected independent bottler to explore the foundational flavour profiles of Scottish whisky. Matured entirely in Sherry casks, this 11-year-old Glenrothes delivers impressive depth with concentrated flavours of dark fruits, preserved raisins, citrus and spices. At 11 years, the whisky strikes an excellent balance between youthful vitality and mature complexity.

Ageing and the distillery

Located in Rothes at the heart of Speyside, Glenrothes has produced single malt since 1879. Soft water from the River Spey supplies the distillery, and the team favours large copper stills to maximise reflux during distillation. Mashing and fermentation are relatively short compared to other distilleries, but distillation itself is deliberately prolonged. The result is a fruity, complex spirit with distinct cereal notes. Ex-Sherry casks of European and American oak are the preferred maturation vessel at Glenrothes. This whisky spent 11 years in selected Sherry casks before being deemed ready and bottled. With Discovery bottlings, no caramel colouring is added, the rich amber colour coming entirely from the exclusive Sherry cask maturation process. The Discovery range comes in three main flavour profiles: Sherry, Bourbon and Peated.

Tasting profile

Bright aromas of Seville orange appear with generous cinnamon and clove. Stewed fruits, red berries, plum and cherry are complemented by milk chocolate notes. On the nose, toasted almonds, juicy raisins and fruit bread emerge. Berries dusted with cinnamon surrounded by sweet milk chocolate. On the palate, creamy and mouth-coating, followed by crushed black pepper, dark berries and warming spices. Marmalade flavours take centre stage. Roasted nuts lead into toasted oak. Raspberry and blackberry are joined by cinnamon and charred oak, finishing with creamy milk chocolate and orange. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering chocolate and orange notes. A richly sherried Speyside that is balanced and welcoming, equally rewarding to newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts.

The house

Gordon & MacPhail is an independent Scotch Whisky bottler and distiller founded in 1895 and based in Elgin, northeast Scotland. James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail established a grocery business before moving into Scotch whisky trading. John Urquhart, who began as an apprentice, quickly proved invaluable in selecting, purchasing and maturing whiskies from local distilleries, becoming a true master of malt whisky. Gordon & MacPhail remains a family business directed by the Urquhart family to this day.

Tasting and food pairing

This Glenrothes Sherry Discovery 11 Year Old is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass at room temperature to fully appreciate the richness of the Sherry cask ageing. A few drops of pure water can be added to reveal further complexity in the stewed fruits and spices. It pairs beautifully with milk or dark chocolate, candied orange tart, fruit cake or mature cheeses such as aged Comté or mature Cheddar. An ideal bottle for discovering the Sherry style in all its roundness and generosity.
