A Pinot Noir signed by Anne Gros. Red fruits, floral and fresh. Elegant, light and of great finesse.
The Hautes Côtes de Nuits Pinot Noir 2024 from Domaine Anne Gros is unanimously hailed as one of the domaine's finest price-to-pleasure ratios, a statement that says everything about what makes this cuvée singular: it carries Anne Gros's signature in all its purity and candour, at a terroir level that makes it a bottle of immediate pleasure and real aromatic depth. A Pinot Noir from the heights, graceful and crunchy, from a parcel that Anne Gros planted with her own hands in the late 1990s, whose first vintage in 2000 immediately rewarded her with a wine of unexpected precocity and finesse.
The terroir and the parcel
This cuvée comes from a single, perfectly identified parcel of 73 ares, planted in the late 1990s just above the village of Vosne-Romanée, on the commune of Concœur, at approximately 400 metres altitude. It is Anne Gros herself who tells this story: this single parcel of 1.73 hectares, untouched by vine, was planted in several phases between 1996 and 1998. The 73 ares of Pinot Noir were implanted in the lower and flatter part of the land, where fossiliferous lavas are most abundant, soils rich in pieces of ammonites, shells and impressions of marine molluscs, witnesses to an ancient sea whose geological richness shines through in every glass. This clay-limestone substrate, deep and well-drained, very well exposed to the south-east and permanently ventilated, creates a particular microclimate: despite the altitude, the parcel has shown remarkable precocity from its very first vintage. The altitude of around 400 metres brings a precious growth delay that allows the best organisation of viticultural work, and gives the wine a natural freshness, lively acidity and mineral tension that clearly distinguish it from lowland Pinots. Vinification is faithful to the domaine's philosophy: complete destemming, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction, and 12 months' ageing in 500-litre barrels with 40 per cent new wood, sufficient to bring complexity without ever masking the fruit's candour.
Tasting profile
The colour is dark ruby red and bright, luminous and of fine clarity. The nose is seductive and immediately candid: perfumes of peony and violet open delicately onto aromas of juicy red and black fruits, redcurrant, raspberry, fresh blackcurrant, embellished with a touch of black pepper and a light fine smoky note, with at the back this fossil and chalky minerality that is the unique signature of this ammonite terroir. On the palate, the texture is always graceful, to use Anne Gros's own word, with fine and supple tannins of remarkable elegance and drinkability. The material is precise, elegant and of superb pinotate verticality, carried by fresh and well-integrated acidity that brings momentum and length. The finish is fruited, lightly spiced and of an aromatic persistence that far exceeds the appellation rank. A Pinot Noir of impressive natural class, accessible from today and capable of ageing pleasantly over five to eight years.
The domaine
Anne Gros comes from one of the oldest winemaking families of the Côte de Nuits, the Gros have been present in Vosne-Romanée since 1830. She took the reins of the family domaine in 1988, barely eighteen years old, immediately bringing her sensitivity, exigence and professionalism to the management of 6.5 hectares spread across nine appellations, from generic Burgundy to the most illustrious Grand Crus. Her son Paul and daughter Julie are gradually taking over daily operations, ensuring continuity of a path of excellence built over more than thirty years. The philosophy is constant: respect the biodiversity of the terroir, vinify with precision and minimal intervention, and let each parcel express itself fully and without artifice in the glass.
Food and wine pairing
This Hautes Côtes de Nuits Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted white meats accompanied by onion or fruit preserves, farmyard poultry with wild mushrooms, roasted chicken with pinot and sweet and savoury sauce, fine country terrine, rabbit with mustard or a plate of soft-paste cheeses such as Brie de Meaux or young Époisses. Served between 15 and 16°C, lightly chilled, it will reveal all the grace and crunchiness of an altitude Pinot Noir signed by one of the greatest vigneronnes of the Côte de Nuits.
