Ripe white fruits, hazelnut, and buttery notes. Rich and mineral with lovely tension and a fresh, persistent finish.
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles 2024 from Domaine Thomas Morey is one of the most mineral, linear, and precise expressions in the domaine's white range, a Chardonnay of absolute aromatic clarity that reveals on this singular terroir in northern Chassagne a character of remarkable frankness and tension. The 2024 vintage, marked by natural freshness and climatic conditions that preserved the acidity and tension of the grapes, delivers one of the most vibrant and sharp-edged expressions of this cuvée in several years.

The terroir of Les Macherelles

Les Macherelles is a premier cru located on the northern slope of Chassagne-Montrachet, bordering Puligny-Montrachet, on a gentle hillside. This climat of approximately 5 hectares has the rare distinction of hosting both Burgundian grape varieties, with Chardonnay occupying roughly one-third and Pinot Noir the remaining two-thirds, due to its particular soil composition. The soil is clay-limestone with a high iron oxide content, the characteristic ferruginous red earth of northern Chassagne that gives its Chardonnays a mineral depth, a lemon-like tension, and an immediately recognisable salinity. The subsoil is particularly stony, ensuring remarkable drainage and forcing the vine roots deep into the bedrock for nourishment, the source of the great minerality and nervous, taut character that define this terroir's singularity. Thomas Morey works a forty-year-old parcel here, hand-harvested at full ripeness.

Tasting Profile

The colour is pale gold with green glints, bright and perfectly clear. The nose is elegant and almost austere in its youth, revealing aromas of fresh pear, citrus (lime, preserved lemon, grapefruit zest), white flowers, and an immediately perceptible saline, chalky minerality. A light note of hazelnut and soft smoke speaks to controlled ageing with only a very small proportion of new oak. On the palate, the wine is absolutely clear, linear, and precise, with a particularly vibrant and nervous acidity on this 2024 vintage structuring a matter that is both fresh and lightly creamy, with crisp fruit and a natural tension that will make it an exceptional wine in a few years. The finish is long, lemony, saline, and mineral, with remarkable persistence, trailing across notes of chalk and wet flint. An elegant Chardonnay, approachable within a few years but above all destined for beautiful cellaring evolution over six to ten years.

The Domaine

Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a winemaking family established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. He founded his own domaine in 2006 with his wife Sylvie, on 13 hectares certified organic since 2017. His style is distinguished by a deliberate pursuit of lightness, tension, and absolute terroir definition, inspired by references such as Jean-Marc Roulot. The Chardonnays ferment with indigenous yeasts and age on fine lees in 228 and 350-litre barrels, with only 20 per cent new oak, without batonnage or with very occasional lees stirring, then rest in tank before bottling after 16 to 18 months of ageing. Sulphur is used to the bare minimum, never during fermentation. Remarkably, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entrusted Thomas Morey with maintaining its vines in the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru, a unique accolade testifying to his viticultural excellence.

Food Pairing

This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles pairs beautifully with roasted sea bass with fresh herb butter, scallops with lemon beurre blanc, grilled lobster with tarragon, sole meunière, asparagus risotto with Parmesan, or Bresse chicken in creamed morel sauce. It also finds fine harmony with aged soft cheeses such as Chaource or Brie de Meaux. Served between 12 and 14 °C, it will express all the minerality and precision of a premier cru of great integrity.
