White flowers, citrus and deep minerality. A precise and elegant Premier Cru Maranges blanc from Domaine Bertrand Bachelet, fresh and delicious.
The Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc 2024 from Domaine Bertrand Bachelet is one of the domaine's most singular and rare cuvées, and a precious rarity in an appellation that devotes 95% of its production to red wines. This Maranges La Fussière Premier Cru is impeccably sculpted, mineral, and of rare elegance. With considerable complexity, the palate is perfectly balanced, taut and flavourful. A white Chardonnay from southern Côte de Beaune that stands alongside its more celebrated northern neighbours.

The terroir of La Fussière

The Maranges appellation is the youngest of Côte de Beaune, established in May 1989. The vineyard is spread across three villages: Dezize-lès-Maranges, Cheilly-lès-Maranges and Sampigny-lès-Maranges. Several hills and slopes form the appellation, all facing south and south-east, between 200 and 400 metres altitude. The climat La Fussière is the largest climat in the appellation, spanning the communes of Cheilly and Dezize-lès-Maranges. The vines occupy a position on the upper slope, on rather thin and very chalky soils that give the wine tension and mineral finesse. This upper slope terroir, chalky and shallow, is precisely what makes this Chardonnay distinctive: disciplined by poor soil and altitude, the vines produce naturally low yields that concentrate the aromas with rare intensity and precision. The winemaking remains faithful to the domaine's philosophy for white wines: immediate pressing without crushing, settling, fermentation with native yeasts, ageing on fine lees in oak barrels with approximately 20% new wood, without bâtonnage to preserve the natural freshness and tension of the terroir.

Tasting profile

Flint, toasted sesame and almond, honeysuckle, apple blossom, ripe pear, lemon and mandarin, acacia honey, with a creamy undertone. On the palate, superb balance between ample, creamy yet very elastic matter, and bright freshness. The finish is magnificent in its precision and length, marked by the saline minerality of the soils and a delightful return of citrus notes. In the 2024 vintage, the remarkable natural freshness and acidity amplify further the chalky minerality and vivacity characteristic of this confidential white. This wine combines minerality, tension and elegance. A Chardonnay to drink within two to five years to fully appreciate the brightness of its fruit.

The domaine

Bertrand Bachelet, a talented vigneron of Côte de Beaune, embodies the new generation of Burgundy winemakers blending traditional expertise with modernity. Based in Dezize-lès-Maranges, he took over Domaine Bachelet in 2011, following his father and grandfather. His recent vintages perfectly illustrate this evolution: juicy and infused reds, and bright and delicious whites.

Food and wine pairing

Serve as an accompaniment to a cold starter or paired with slightly acidic cooked-paste cheeses such as Cantal. It will also pair well with pan-seared scallops with brown butter, trout with almonds, river fish en papillote with herbs, poultry in light cream sauce or semi-dry goat cheese from the Hautes-Côtes. Served between 10 and 12°C, it will reveal all the mineral freshness, chalky tension and deliciousness of a Premier Cru Chardonnay from Maranges.
