White flowers, citrus and crisp minerality. A precise and digestible Auxey-Duresses from Fabien Coche, fresh, elegant and notably approachable.
The Auxey-Duresses Blanc 2024 from Domaine Fabien Coche is one of the most admired and recommended cuvées in the range, scoring 92/100 from Decanter and 16/20 from Jancis Robinson on the 2022 vintage. This is a complete wine, as mineral as it is floral, as broad as it is taut, representing the quintessence of what a fine Burgundian Chardonnay can offer without breaking the bank. Rich in substance, complex in its aromas, it lets the terroir shine through. A great white, fresh and appealing, finely etched, a lovely vintage from the Côte de Beaune.

Terroir and vineyard

Auxey-Duresses is one of those Côte de Beaune villages that remained too long in the shadow of illustrious neighbours Meursault and Volnay, though discerning collectors have long recognised its remarkable quality-to-price ratio. The village sits in a valley west of Meursault, with varied slope exposures that allow Chardonnay to express a palette of genuine complexity: tighter and more mineral than its Meursault neighbour, less opulent but often more precise and finely chiseled. The marl-limestone soils of the appellation give the wine its characteristic minerality. The vines are ploughed with controlled natural grassing, farmed organically. Fabien elaborates his wines with minimal intervention: fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, no enzymes, and sulphur is used sparingly. Free sulphur levels rarely exceed 30 mg/l on whites. Vinification is traditional, with 11 months ageing on lees in oak, of which 20% is new.

Tasting profile

The robe is pale yellow with golden glints. The nose reveals delicate white fruit aromas and floral notes. The palate is fresh and well-balanced, with fine minerality, silky texture and a persistent finish. This Auxey-Duresses unfolds lovely delicate aromas of white fruits (pear, apple) on the nose, with floral notes and touches of hazelnut. Fresh and well-balanced, the palate offers fine minerality that underscores the structure, in a silky texture with light unctuousness, and a persistent finish with hints of vanilla and butter. White fruit notes, floral nuances and even spicy notes emerge. The attack is fresh with lovely fruit character and already impressive richness, a remarkable wine. A wine with ageing potential that can develop over five to eight years.

The domaine

Established in 1940 and formerly known as Coche-Bizouard, Domaine Fabien Coche cultivates all the nobility of great Burgundy wines. Located in Meursault, this family domaine comprises 12 hectares of vineyard spread across Meursault, Pommard, Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Saint-Romain, Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet. The domaine possesses one of the richest ranges of appellations on the Côte de Beaune, through its diversity and accessibility. Vignalis particularly recommends the Auxey-Duresses.

Food pairing

Serve with fine fish in cream sauce to reveal all its qualities. Great pleasure assured. Enjoy with oysters, scallops, steamed fish, fish terrines, asparagus risotto or roasted poultry. It pairs beautifully with aged goat cheese, white asparagus with mousseline sauce or poached cod with beurre blanc. Served between 10 and 12 °C, it will reveal all the crisp minerality and aromatic complexity of one of the most precious and well-kept Chardonnays of the Côte de Beaune.
