Ripe stone fruits, hazelnut and buttery notes. A rich and mineral Meursault Premier Cru from Domaine Fabien Coche, broad-shouldered, elegant and with impressive length.
The Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2024 from Domaine Fabien Coche is the flagship cuvée and most ambitious wine from this family domaine firmly rooted in the heart of Meursault since 1940. A Chardonnay of remarkable richness, complexity and generosity that embodies everything the sunniest and most opulent Premier Cru of Meursault has to offer when in precise and rigorous hands. A mythic white Burgundy offering remarkable complexity, with mineral notes of warm stone, aromas of white flowers and clementine, and fine hints of dry fruits such as almonds and roasted hazelnuts. The palate is powerful and elegant with remarkable persistence and texture on the finish.
The terroir of Charmes
Charmes represents the largest and most emblematic Premier Cru of Meursault, extending over roughly 30 hectares to the south-west of the village, bordering Puligny-Montrachet. It is the most generous, glyceric and sunny climat in the appellation, whose deep and marly soils, rich in calcareous clay, are particularly suited to Chardonnay. The vines find here both the depth to establish themselves durably, the mineral richness to build aromatic complexity, and the natural warmth of exposure to achieve slow and harmonious maturity. Domaine Fabien Coche has been located at the heart of Meursault since 1940, and manages 12 hectares of vineyard spread across Meursault, Pommard, Auxey-Duresses, Monthélie, Saint-Romain, Saint-Aubin and Puligny-Montrachet. Winemaking follows Burgundian tradition: gentle pneumatic pressing, slow fermentation in oak barrels, ageing on fine lees with measured stirring and oak proportions adapted to the richness of the terroir, for an expression that is both generous and precise.
Tasting profile
The robe is a brilliant and luminous golden yellow, intense and radiant. On the nose, intense aromas of white-fleshed fruits such as pear and apple mingle with subtle exotic fruit notes like pineapple and mango. Hints of vanilla, fresh butter and roasted hazelnuts add a gourmand and elegant dimension to the whole. Mineral notes of warm stone and white flower aromas enrich this palette with remarkable depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine reveals itself rich and unctuous. A velvety texture caresses the palate. Aromas of white-fleshed fruits, exotic nuances, notes of vanilla and fresh butter marry harmoniously to create perfect balance. The finish is long, persistent and lightly buttery, with that roasted and mineral character that marks great vintages of Charmes. A wine capable of ageing pleasantly in cellar for eight to ten years.
The domaine
Domaine Fabien Coche has been based at the heart of Meursault since 1940. Fabien produces several fine appellations, including Saint-Aubin, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses, and many others, for a production of around 50,000 bottles. Heir to an estate that bore the name Coche-Bizouard for several decades, Fabien Coche chose to give it his own first name when taking over the family domaine, asserting through this gesture a personal and demanding vision that reads in every cuvée of the range. His Meursault 1er Cru Charmes, scoring 93 to 94 points in previous vintages, is widely regarded as one of the most successful and consistent expressions of this appellation.
Food pairings
This Meursault 1er Cru Charmes will pair beautifully with shellfish and crustaceans, langoustines, scallops, roasted turbot with beurre blanc, lobster in cream, sole meunière, veal sweetbreads with morels, or Bresse chicken in champagne sauce. It will also find beautiful harmony with ripe soft cheeses such as Brie de Meaux or Chaource. Served between 12 and 14°C, with 20 minutes of decanting advised for younger vintages, it will reveal all the richness, generosity and depth of one of Meursault's finest terroirs.
