Agricole rum from Guadeloupe with notes of vanilla, tropical fruit and sweet wood. Round, warm and highly aromatic.
The Longueteau Rhum Souvenir La Tradition 3 ans is one of the most personal and moving spirits in the range — an aged agricole rum matured in cognac casks, its name telling a story before describing a tasting profile. La Tradition is François Longueteau's Proustian madeleine: his grandfather Paul-Henri's box of soft salted caramel candies, always within reach in the family Creole dwelling, whose memory imbues each sip with disarming aromatic precision and emotion. Awarded a Silver Medal at the Spirits Selection by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2024, this rum proves that Guadeloupe's oldest independent distillery knows how to vinify memory with as much talent as cane itself.
Cane, terroir and distillery
The Longueteau family has been established for over a century at the Domaine du Marquisat de Sainte-Marie, nestled against the Soufrière massif in south-east Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe. The distillery is recognised as the oldest in continuous operation and one of the last fully independent distilleries in the world of agricole rum. This exceptional site, at the foot of an active volcano on mineral-rich volcanic soils, is one of rum's most singular terroirs — a geology nourishing cane with incomparable mineral richness and aromatic complexity. La Tradition is crafted from a precise blend of two cane varieties cultivated on family parcels: 65% red cane and 35% blue cane, two historic Guadeloupe varieties whose complementarity is the source of this cuvée's balance and complexity. Like all agricole rums, it is distilled directly from freshly pressed cane juice, not molasses, in a traditional Creole column, preserving all the vegetal, fruity and mineral richness of the raw material. Three years of ageing takes place entirely in 300 litre cognac casks, a precious container whose aromatic memory gently impregnates the rum with notes of noble wood, caramel and candied fruit, through slow and progressive micro-oxygenation that rounds and complexifies the whole with remarkable delicacy. Alcohol by volume: 45%.
Tasting profile
The colour is luminous gold with golden reflections, contemplated by the estate itself as a Guadeloupe sunset. The nose is striking in its immediacy and elegance: delicate, noble woody notes open as a bouquet, accompanied by caramelised and slightly candied touches — exactly like Paul-Henri's soft caramels — enriched with sweet vanilla, ripe tropical fruits and a light brown sugar note that signs the agricultural origin of the cane. On the palate, the texture is silky and harmonious, with flavours of vanilla, noble wood and melted caramel, supported by discreet natural acidity bringing freshness and tension to a generous and well-balanced body. The finish is long, suave and delicately salty, that fine hint of fleur de sel which is François Longueteau's affectionate and precise nod to his grandfather's box, making this a spirit one does not forget. An agricole rum of remarkable elegance and depth, to be savoured neat to fully appreciate its complexity.
The Souvenir collection
The Souvenir range is Maison Longueteau's most personal and narrative collection, a series of rums where each cuvée evokes a specific childhood memory of François Longueteau, fifth generation, spent in the family Creole dwelling alongside his grandparents. L'Intemporel is the white rum of celebrations; La Tradition is the aged rum of caramelised afternoons; L'Hommage, aged five years in the same cognac casks, is the rum for great occasions. Three family portraits, three emotions, three spirits of authenticity and quality honouring Guadeloupe's oldest independent distillery.
Tasting and pairings
La Tradition is ideally savoured neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass that concentrates aromas and progressively reveals all the richness of cognac cask ageing. A single ice cube can be added for those wishing to broaden the aromas with gentle coolness. It can also be enjoyed as Ti-Punch, the emblematic Antillean cocktail, with a squeeze of lime and a touch of cane sugar. With desserts, it pairs perfectly with caramelised apple tart with fleur de sel, intense dark chocolate fondant or salted butter caramel — a sweet homage to the memory from which it takes its name.
