Aged agricultural rum from Guadeloupe. Dried fruit, dark chocolate, spice and toasted wood. Intense, complex and long.
The Rhum Vieux Symphonie from Maison Longueteau is the second movement of the Harmonie Collection, the passage that builds, develops and expands the aromatic palette opened by the Prélude, before the apotheosis of the Concerto. Symphonie is one of Longueteau's signature creations, reflecting the boldness and complexity of the vintages that compose it. The mastery of different flavour notes offers a beautiful balance between finesse and intensity. This 12th batch reveals, like its predecessors, a true symphony of flavours, a cuvée that truly deserves its name. An aged agricultural rum of remarkable complexity and indulgence, bottled at cask strength without reduction, produced in limited numbered series.

The cane, the terroir and the distillery

Founded in 1895, Longueteau is Guadeloupe's oldest active distillery. The distillery distinguishes itself as both cultivator and distiller of its own sugarcane, autonomous and self-sufficient, owning 100 hectares of cane around the distillery and controlling the entire production process of its spirits. Symphonie is an assemblage of very old agricultural rums aged in cognac casks and new oak, from multiple carefully selected vintages chosen by the cellar master to create the perfect accord. This blend is aged in both new and ex-cognac casks, offering the combination of both ageing styles. This duality precisely, the sweetness and roundness of ex-cognac casks on one side, the aromatic power and pronounced woodiness of new oak on the other, is what creates Symphonie's complexity and depth compared to Prélude. The Harmonie Collection is a nod to classical music, unveiling three rums: Prélude, Symphonie and Concerto. Each bottle is numbered and bottled at cask strength without the addition of water, preserving all the natural aromatic intensity of the distillate.

Tasting profile

The colour is a lovely amber hue with tawny reflections, leaning generously towards gold and utterly radiant. On the nose, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg unfold in all their splendour. Caramel and burnt sugar blossom in unison and signal the woody aromas to come. A complex aged rum, evolving through toffee and caramel, paired with spiced and peppery notes. The palate opens on grilled, toasted, spiced notes, all resting on a rich and indulgent sugarcane frame. Roasted notes, in rhythm with the naturally indulgent and sweet aromas of the cane, complete the complex profile. The finish lingers pleasantly around warm flavours of baked banana. A spirit of complexity and indulgence that lovers of aged agricultural rums will immediately recognise as the signature of the great Caribbean houses.

The Harmonie Collection

The Harmonie Collection, with its cuvées Symphonie, Concerto and Opéra, illustrates a subtle blending expertise, creating profound rums with notes of soft spice, wood and fruit. Prélude is the opening, fresh, floral and fruity, aged exclusively in new casks. Symphonie is the development, more complex and deeper, combining new and ex-cognac casks in an assemblage of multiple vintages. Concerto is the apotheosis, very old, smoky and of rare sophistication. Three movements of the same score, produced in limited numbered series of 1,400 bottles each, bottled at cask strength and without reduction, the absolute commitment of Maison Longueteau to return the distillate in its purest and most authentic expression.

Tasting and pairing

Symphonie is enjoyed neat, though with care needed to appreciate the power of this cask strength spirit. Take your time and savour it in very small sips. Serve in a tulip glass, gently warmed in the palm of your hand, left for a few minutes to open and allow the woody notes to harmonise with the fruit. A few drops of very pure water may be added to open up the aromas and reveal further the complexity of the blend. Paired with food, Symphonie finds natural harmony with dark chocolate, a fine cigar, a caramelised dessert such as tarte Tatin with bananas flambéed in rum, or an aged hard cheese such as old Comté or 36-month Parmigiano Reggiano.
