Old agricultural rhum from Guadeloupe, Maison Longueteau. Candied fruits, vanilla, gentle spices, and refined woody notes. Complex and silken.
The Rhum Vieux Concerto from Maison Longueteau stands as the absolute pinnacle and crowning achievement of the Harmonie Collection, the third and final movement of a range composed like a musical score, following Prélude and Symphonie, reaching its apotheosis here. It is the pursuit of Harmony with a capital H, the kind that enchants the senses and soothes the spirit, that transports one to shores of pure beauty, as the house would say. A remarkably sophisticated old agricultural rhum from Guadeloupe, produced in numbered series of only 1,400 bottles per batch, bottled at cask strength without alcohol reduction, a choice of absolute authenticity that reveals the rhum in all its natural power and truth.

The cane, the terroir, and the distillery

Maison Longueteau is the story of a family rooted since 1895 in the Marquisat de Sainte-Marie, Capesterre-Belle-Eau, on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, at the foot of the Soufrière massif. It was Louis Philippe Henry Longueteau who transformed this sugar estate into a distillery, thereby founding the oldest independent family distillery still operating in Guadeloupe. Five generations later, François Longueteau and his family continue this tradition with the same rigour and attachment to the volcanic terroir that forged the identity of the domaine's rums. The property is divided into twelve single-crop parcels, separately cultivating red cane and blue cane, two historic Caribbean varieties whose contrasting characters, precisely blended by the master distillers, are at the origin of the complexity and depth of Longueteau rums. The Concerto stems from a meticulously selected blend of the distillery's finest vintages, aged over six years in a combination of ex-cognac oak casks and new oak casks, a learned pairing that marries the softness and roundness of ex-cognac wood with the assertive aromatic power and pronounced oakiness of new oak, through slow, progressive micro-oxidation that gradually refines the spirit over several years.

Tasting profile

The colour is a deep mahogany with copper highlights, luminous and dense, the colour of excellence and time. The nose demands attention and contemplation: aromas of melting caramel and red fruit preserve emerge with intensity, accompanied by hints of candied cherry and stewed red berries, before progressively revealing with aeration the melting woody notes, spices, pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and that bewitching scent of blonde tobacco and vanilla-tinged cigar that is the signature of great old agricultural rums on new oak. On the palate, the first impression is one of surprising lightness for a cask-strength rhum: the texture is enveloping and generous, woody and salted caramel notes sit alongside fruited flavours with remarkable delicacy and harmony, lifted by a touch of toastiness and fine saline minerality inherited from Basse-Terre's volcanic terroir. The finish is long, sophisticated and persistent, unfolding over notes of blonde tobacco, vanilla and stewed fruit that deepen gradually, a flavour profile that plays out over several minutes, like a perfect chord refusing to fade. A rhum for pure contemplation, to be savoured in a balloon glass gently warmed in the palm of your hand.

The Harmonie Collection

The Harmonie Collection is Maison Longueteau's most ambitious and accomplished range, three expressions constructed like a concert, from opening to apotheosis. Prélude, a gourmand and floral amber rhum, is the invitation. Symphonie, a more complex blend of old rums, is the development. Concerto, the pinnacle of the range, bottled at cask strength in a limited edition of 1,400 numbered bottles, is the finale, the perfect interpretation of the aromatic notes from the distillery's finest vintages, brought to its height in each successive batch.

Tasting and pairing

Concerto must be tasted pure, at room temperature, in a balloon glass warmed in the palm of your hand to progressively release all the richness and complexity of the blend. A few drops of very pure water may be added to broaden the aromas and further reveal the fruited structure. With food, it finds striking harmony with a square of 75 per cent dark chocolate scattered with salt crystals, a fine Havana cigar, a salted caramel butter dessert, or an intense chocolate ganache. Above all, it is a rhum for solitary contemplation, to be uncorked for grand occasions and shared with the rare few who understand that certain spirits are earned.
