Aged agricole rhum from Guadeloupe by Maison Longueteau. Candied fruit, vanilla, gentle spices and elegant woody notes. Complex and remarkably silky.
The Rhum Vieux Concerto by Maison Longueteau is the crowning achievement and centrepiece of the Collection Harmonie, the third and final movement of a range conceived as a musical score, following the Prélude and the Symphonie, reaching its zenith here. It is the pursuit of Harmony with a capital H, the kind that bewitches the senses and quiets the mind, that carries you to the shores of pure beauty, to borrow the words of the house. A very old agricole rhum from Guadeloupe of rare sophistication, released in numbered series of just 1,400 bottles per batch, bottled at cask strength without dilution, a commitment to authenticity that reveals the rhum in all its natural power and truth.

The cane, the terroir and the distillery

Maison Longueteau is the story of a family rooted since 1895 at the Marquisat de Sainte-Marie, in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, at the foot of the Soufrière massif. It was Louis Philippe Henry Longueteau who transformed this sugar estate into a distillery, founding what remains the oldest independent family distillery still in operation in Guadeloupe. Five generations later, François Longueteau and his family carry on this tradition with the same rigour and the same devotion to the volcanic terroir that has forged the identity of the estate's rhums. The property is divided into twelve single-crop parcels, cultivating red cane and blue cane separately, two historic Antillean varieties whose contrasting characters, blended with precision by the master distillers, are at the source of the complexity and depth of Longueteau rhums. The Concerto is drawn from a meticulously selected blend of the distillery's finest vintages, aged for over six years, partly in oak casks that previously held cognac and partly in new oak casks, a knowing combination that marries the softness and roundness of ex-cognac wood with the aromatic power and assertive oak of new casks, through a slow, progressive micro-oxygenation that refines the spirit over several years.

Tasting profile

The colour is a deep mahogany with coppery highlights, luminous and dense, the colour of time and mastery. The nose strikes with an immediacy and complexity that command silence and contemplation: aromas of melting caramel and jammy red fruits open with intensity, joined by a touch of candied cherry and stewed red berries, before gradually revealing, as it breathes, notes of integrated oak, spices (pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg) and that beguiling perfume of blond tobacco and vanilla-scented cigar that is the hallmark of great old agricole rhums aged on new oak. On the palate, the first impression is one of surprising lightness for a cask-strength rhum: the texture is enveloping and generous, the woody and salted caramel notes sit alongside fruit flavours with remarkable delicacy and harmony, lifted by a toasted touch and a fine saline minerality inherited from the volcanic terroir of Basse-Terre. The finish is long, sophisticated and persistent, stretching across notes of blond tobacco, vanilla and stewed fruit that deepen progressively, an aromatic score that plays out over several minutes, like a perfect chord that refuses to fade. A rhum for pure contemplation, to be savoured in a balloon glass gently warmed in the hollow of the palm.

The Collection Harmonie

The Collection Harmonie is the most ambitious and accomplished range from Maison Longueteau, three expressions built like a concert, from overture to apotheosis. The Prélude, a gourmand and floral amber rhum, is the invitation. The Symphonie, a more complex blend of aged rhums, is the development. The Concerto, the pinnacle of the range, bottled at cask strength in a limited edition of 1,400 numbered bottles, is the finale, the consummate interpretation of the aromatic notes from the distillery's greatest vintages, brought to its fullest expression in each successive batch.

Tasting and pairings

The Concerto must be enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a balloon glass warmed in the hollow of the palm to progressively release all the richness and complexity of the blend. A few drops of very pure water may be added to open the aromas and further reveal the fruit structure. As a pairing, it finds striking harmony with a square of 75% dark chocolate with salt flakes, a fine Havana cigar, a salted butter caramel dessert or an intense chocolate fondant. Above all, this is a rhum for solitary contemplation, to be opened on great occasions and shared only with those rare initiates who understand that certain spirits must be earned.
