A soft and approachable amber agricultural rum from Guadeloupe, rooted in fresh cane, vanilla and gentle spice. Supple, generous and genuinely unpretentious.
The Rhum Ambré Longueteau 45° is the most accessible, versatile and generous introduction to the Longueteau house, the everyday rum and the spirit for gathering large tables, one you uncork without ceremony but which surprises each time with its softness, its roundness and the lingering presence of fresh cane. A rum aged in wood with disarming freshness, softer than most agricultural ambrés in its category, which reveals the beauty and richness of the volcanic terroir of the Marquisat de Sainte-Marie in every glass.

The cane, the terroir and the distillery

The Longueteau house has been anchored since 1895 at the Domaine du Marquisat de Sainte-Marie in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, at the foot of the Soufrière volcanic massif, the very spot where Christopher Columbus landed in November 1493 during one of his Atlantic crossings, in memory of which the place took the name of his ship, the Santa Maria. The oldest independent family distillery in Guadeloupe, now run by the fifth generation, works its own 100 hectares of cane spread across twelve individually cultivated parcels, the red cane R579 (generous and rich in natural sugars) and the blue cane B69.566 (elegant and fresh), whose precise blending at 65 per cent and 35 per cent forms the aromatic foundation of all Longueteau rums. This Rhum Ambré 45° is made from this same blend of fresh cane juice distilled in the distillery's traditional copper column. The 18-month ageing is conducted in oak casks that previously held cognac, an important detail that sets this amber rum apart from versions aged in large capacity vats, the greater contact with wood and the presence of cognac in the staves imparting considerable aromatic richness for its youth, with gently woody, vanilla and spice notes that never weigh down the natural freshness of the cane. The rum is then reduced to 45 per cent alc. vol., a strength that allows it to be enjoyed on any occasion without ever losing the brightness of its agricultural character.

Tasting profile

The colour is a beautiful luminous gold, clear and bright. The nose is fragrant, generous and immediately inviting, with vanilla asserting itself gently, accompanied by notes of honey and fresh sugar cane, lightly tart and floral, with a discreet resinous touch from the wood ageing. On the palate, the attack is lively and slightly tart, a hallmark of the agricultural freshness of Longueteau rums, before the structure quickly melts into aromas of cinnamon, vanilla and sweet cane of remarkable softness. The texture is round and generous, softer than most agricultural amber rums, with a pleasant fruity tension that maintains balance and drinkability. The finish is light, fruity and gently woody, with a persistence of cane juice and citrus that leaves an impression of freshness and naturalness. An accessible, straightforward and versatile agricultural rum, ideal neat, on ice or as a classic ambré Ti-Punch.

The distillery

The Longueteau family has controlled the entire process of manufacture and bottling since 1895, ensuring complete traceability from field to bottle, a philosophy of the 'domaine' in every sense of the word, faithful to the legacy of Louis Philippe Henry Longueteau who founded the distillery during the great sugar crisis of the late 19th century. The Longueteau range extends from white rums to the very old rums of the Harmonie Collection, passing through the rums of the Souvenir Collection, a tasting journey of consistent coherence and rigour, of which this Ambré 45° makes an ideal starting point.

Tasting and food pairings

This Rhum Ambré 45° is best enjoyed neat, lightly chilled or on a single stone, in a whisky or rum glass. It is the ideal foundation for a classic ambré Ti-Punch, a few drops of lime and a touch of cane sugar, and excels too in cocktails based on amber rum or in cooking and pastry-making. It will pair beautifully with creole charcuterie, salt cod acras, flambéed banana fritters or homemade rum cake. Served between 18 and 20 °C for a neat pour, it will reveal all the fruity roundness and softness characteristic of the agricultural rums of the Longueteau house.
