Fruity and delicate, with vanilla, pear and floral notes. A Speyside single malt from Gordon & Macphail, aged in ex-bourbon cask, fresh, silky and genuinely approachable.
The Auchroisk Bourbon Discovery 10 Year Old from Gordon & Macphail is one of the most distinctive and overlooked bottles in the Discovery range, that introductory collection created by Scotland's most respected independent bottler to reveal the classic character of each distillery. Part of Gordon & Macphail's Discovery series, this 10 year old matured in ex-bourbon cask, expressing Auchroisk's characteristic spiced profile. A quiet distillery whose name alone intrigues before the first sip.

The distillery and ageing

Auchroisk is a Banffshire whisky distillery in Scottish Speyside, established after the Dorie well was discovered with water similar to that used by Glen Spey, employed by Justerini & Brooks for their blending programme. Built in 1974 as a model distillery, Auchroisk houses eight lantern-topped stills arranged in two neat rows. Its construction marked the start of a new era for Scotch blending. Architecturally distinctive with its modernist whitewashed structure on the heath, it was commissioned by IDV, then parent company of J&B, who felt their blend sales justified a new distillery for their Speyside portfolio alongside Glen Spey, Knockando and Strathmill. Auchroisk was first bottled as a single malt in 1986 under the Singleton prefix. This expression matured in first-fill ex-bourbon cask.

Tasting profile

White pepper and hazelnut wrapped in chocolate emerge on the nose, leading to bright citrus, pan-fried cinnamon and stewed stone fruit. Vanilla dominates the aroma, followed by apple and poached pear, toasted almonds giving way to pineapple and hints of lemon blossom. On the palate, sweet, creamy honey combines with ripe banana and tangy orange. Apricot comes through, balanced by cracked black pepper. A well-balanced introduction to Auchroisk, offering classic complexity in a fluid bourbon-influenced style. The medium-bodied finish shows persistent tropical fruit and oak. A spiced, fruity Speyside, accessible and refined, revealing the understated but singular character of this quiet distillery.

The house

Gordon & Macphail is an independent Scotch whisky bottler and distiller founded in 1895 and based in Elgin, north-east Scotland. James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail established a grocery before entering the Scotch whisky trade. John Urquhart, who began as an apprentice, became essential to selecting, purchasing and maturing whiskies from local distilleries, emerging as a true master of single malt. Gordon & Macphail remains a family business run by the Urquhart family.

Tasting and food pairing

This Auchroisk Bourbon Discovery 10 Year Old is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass at room temperature to reveal the full spiced and fruity character of its ex-bourbon maturation. A few drops of pure water can open the aromas and highlight citrus and stone fruit notes further. It pairs beautifully with pear and almond tart, spiced fruit cake, hard cheeses such as aged Comté or Gruyère, or simply toasted hazelnuts. An ideal bottle for discovering a quiet yet precious distillery in a classic, accessible style.
