Red and dark fruits, spices and deep minerality. A Grand Cru from Gevrey of rare elegance from Domaine Faiveley, complex, silky, and built for long ageing.
The Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru 2022 from Domaine Faiveley is one of the most precious and anticipated Grand Crus from this benchmark house, which ranks among Burgundy's finest producers and crafts one of the greatest expressions of Latricières-Chambertin. From the generous and sunny 2022 vintage, celebrated across the Côte de Nuits for the richness and maturity of its fruit, this Grand Cru reveals the full depth, minerality and complexity of a terroir that the Middle Ages already called the "Little Marvel".
The terroir of Latricières-Chambertin
In the Middle Ages this climat was called "Little Marvel" to celebrate the quality of its wines. The existence of Latricières-Chambertin predates 1508. It is the southernmost Grand Cru of Gevrey-Chambertin. The 1.20 hectare parcel enjoys an east-west exposure. Its shallow, stony soils, rich in limestone and graced with a fine layer of silica, create a singular terroir. This wine embodies perfect balance, between the minerality of Clos de la Roche and the depth of Chambertin. Virile, it distinguishes itself through unique personality and atypical character. A salty and floral wine, subtly revealing the nuances of its terroir. Though it lacks the raw power of a typical Gevrey, our Latricières-Chambertin seduces through its minerality and complexity. After careful, manual harvest in crates and sorting on tables, winemaking is classical, with no added yeast, and ageing in 50% new oak before bottling without filtration. The fruit undergoes a short cold soak before fermentation partly in wooden tronconical vats. Following a maceration of more than 3 weeks, wines are pressed vertically to obtain pure, high-quality juices. Ageing in oak in nineteenth-century vaulted cellars lasts 16 to 18 months, with two-thirds new oak of fine grain and moderate toast.
Tasting profile
The colour is an intense ruby hue, almost opaque. The nose opens with aromas of black cherry, violet and forest floor, with spicy notes. The palate is rich and velvety, offering beautiful tannin structure, balanced by lively acidity and ripe fruit flavours. The finish is persistent, revealing mineral nuances and gentle oak. The nose unveils intense roasted and spicy fragrances. The palate seduces with its ripe tannins of silky touch, its power and structure. From the generous 2022 vintage, the richness of fruit and aromatic concentration bring additional depth and fullness to this naturally mineral and complex terroir. The finish is long, saline and persistent, with that return of black cherry, spice and chalky minerality that confirms the greatness of this "Little Marvel". A wine built for the next twenty years of ageing.
The domaine
Domaine Faiveley has been based in Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825. It owns 120 hectares of vineyard and boasts no fewer than 12 Grand Crus and 25 Premier Crus. Faiveley also holds beautiful parcels on the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, driven by the ambition to reveal Burgundy's greatest terroirs. The success story of Domaine Faiveley is remarkable, with 7 generations having succeeded one another since its creation. Today led by Erwan and Ève Faiveley, the domaine continues with the same rigour and exigence the path of excellence built by their predecessors, with certified HVE 3 sustainable viticulture and constant investment in vineyard and cellar quality.
Food pairings
This Latricières-Chambertin pairs beautifully with roasted quail, pigeon, bone-in beef steak or beef roast. For optimal tasting serve at 16 °C. It will also pair with jugged hare, roasted woodcock on canapé, venison loin with wild berries or aged cheeses such as Époisses or aged Comté. Two hours of decanting is essential in its youth. Served between 15 and 17 °C, it will progressively reveal all the salty minerality, spicy depth and breed of a Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru that truly deserves its medieval nickname of Little Marvel.
