White flowers, citrus and subtle buttery notes on calcareous terroir. Faiveley's Mercurey blanc is precise and elegant, fresh, mineral and very approachable.
The Mercurey Blanc Clos Rochette Monopole 2024 from Domaine Faiveley is one of the most elegant and consistent cuvées from the Côte Chalonnaise, sourced from a historic monopoly acquired by the Faiveley house in 1933 alongside the red La Framboisière. Dressed in clear pale gold, this Mercurey reveals itself expressive (white flowers, vanilla), fresh, dynamic and elegant on the palate, without lacking richness. In a word: balanced. A cuvée that speaks to the rigour and expertise of a house through which seven generations have passed since 1825.

Terroir and vineyard

This parcel neighbours La Framboisière. In Clos Rochette, the soils are particularly compact, hard to plough, scattered with small stones that give this climat its name. This parcel has been a Monopole of the Domaine since 1933. These compact clay-limestone soils, dotted with stones, are precisely what gives this Chardonnay its particular character: remarkable natural freshness, well-defined mineral tension and aromatic precision that far exceed what is normally expected from a Mercurey blanc. The vines are cultivated with care and rigour: winter pruning, spring budbreak management and green harvesting in summer. Hand-picked harvests. Grapes are cut and sorted by hand. The must is extracted using a pneumatic press, then settled. Alcoholic fermentation takes place over 4 weeks, partly (55%) in French oak barrels, of which 25% are new. Ageing continues for 16 months with regular stirring, the remainder of the cuvée being aged in tank. This allows the wine to acquire delicate oaked notes while preserving its freshness and typicity.

Tasting profile

The robe is a brilliant pale yellow. The nose displays beautiful aromatic complexity, bright with white flowers and spice. The palate reveals lovely liveliness on the attack, gently tempered by the roundness and richness acquired during oak ageing. The nose is quite open, even in youth, unveiling lovely floral and citrus notes; oaked aromas arrive later without masking the fruit. The palate is frank, quite lively yet with fine texture, good richness. Very balanced. A lovely wine with citrus notes and soft flesh, with fine persistence through fresh acidity. Spiced, floral and fresh, the nose sets the tone and does not disappoint: liveliness, harmony, roundness and enveloping texture. The magic works. A Chardonnay to drink from now in all its vibrancy, capable of evolving harmoniously over five to eight years.

The domaine

Domaine Faiveley has been based in Nuits-Saint-Georges since 1825. It owns 120 hectares of vineyard and no fewer than 12 Grand Crus as well as 25 Premier Crus. Faiveley also possesses beautiful parcels on the Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise, with the ambition to reveal Burgundy's greatest terroirs. The Faiveley story is no ordinary one, as seven generations have succeeded each other since its creation. Domaine Faiveley has been HVE 3 certified since 2019, reflecting its commitment to limiting impact on the environment, wildlife and flora.

Food pairings

This Mercurey blanc pairs beautifully with vol-au-vents, fish, shellfish, oysters or mussel casserole. It will also accompany sole meunière, scallops with chive cream, risotto with asparagus and Parmesan or cream-based poultry dishes. It finds lovely harmony with soft-paste cheeses such as Chaource or aged Brie de Meaux. Served between 10 and 12°C, it will reveal all the floral freshness and mineral precision of a monopoly Chardonnay from the Côte Chalonnaise.
