Château de Pibarnon's Mourvèdre from the steep, limestone-rich slopes above the Mediterranean, offering dark fruits, garrigue, and leather notes. Tightly structured with mineral tension and serious ageing potential.
The Bandol Rouge 2022 from Château de Pibarnon stands among Provence's great red wines, and remains one of the world's most compelling ambassadors for Mourvèdre. On the 2022 vintage, sunny and concentrated, unanimously praised for the richness and ripeness of its grapes across the appellation, this red reveals fruited fullness and aromatic depth of remarkable generosity and complexity. Already quite elegant in balance, with sweet spices threading through to a fine, refined finish.

Terroir and vineyard

It is Pibarnon's unique terroir, set within a natural amphitheatre of rare Triassic limestone, that gives the domaine's wines their distinctive style so loved by purists. Steep hillsides climbing to 300 metres above the Mediterranean endow these wines with significant acidity and remarkable variation in sun exposure. The terroir comprises a high proportion of Triassic limestone combined with blue marls such as those found at Château d'Yquem. The blend is 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache, aged 20 months in oak foudres. The domaine has been certified organic since the 2019 vintage, pursuing viticulture where soils remain preserved and alive, with biodynamic methods.

Tasting profile

On the warm, generously sunny 2022 vintage, the grapes achieved particularly complete phenolic and aromatic ripeness on this altitude terroir. The nose opens with aromas of very ripe red and dark fruits, black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant, accompanied by liquorice, sweet spices, Provençal garrigue and a subtle smoky touch. With aeration, nuances of aged leather, blond tobacco and musk progressively enrich this bouquet with growing depth and complexity. On the palate, the wine is ample and fleshy, with richness and generosity reflecting the vintage's warmth, supported by ripe tannins of remarkable velvety texture that meld harmoniously into concentrated matter. Natural acidity, preserved by cool nights on this altitude slope, provides the tension and length needed for overall balance. The finish is long, spicy and persistent, with those notes of dry garrigue and thyme that mark the greatest terroir-driven Bandols. Peak drinking is estimated between 2028 and 2042, with cellaring potential through 2048.

The domaine

Henri de Saint-Victor created Château de Pibarnon in 1978, establishing it within decades among Bandol's flagship properties. Since 2000, his son Éric de Saint-Victor has led the domaine, continually refining the expression of wines from the chalky terroirs of Cadière-d'Azur. Respect for winemaking tradition, hand-harvesting, precise vinification and ageing in oak foudres give Pibarnon's cuvées a strong identity, both faithful to Bandol's typicity and distinctly elegant.

Food pairing

This Bandol Rouge pairs beautifully with roasted lamb with garrigue herbs, slow-braised Provençal daube, rack of lamb with black olives and thyme, or game birds. It will find harmonious accord with aged cheeses such as Banon or mature Pélardon. Decant at least one hour before service. Served between 16 and 18°C, it will progressively reveal the full depth, nobility and character of one of Provence's finest red wines.
