Intense dark fruits, garrigue, liquorice and spice. Powerful and concentrated on the llicorella soils, with a long, mineral finish.
The Priorat Gratallops 2022 from Clos Mogador is one of the most moving and foundational bottles in contemporary Spanish viticulture, the wine through which René Barbier literally reinvented an entire appellation and put Priorat back on the map of the world's great wines. Rated 97 points by Wine Advocate, Robert Parker and James Suckling, this 2022 is serious and harmonious, without any excess. The tannins are fine and chalky, the balance and harmony remarkable, in a Mediterranean vintage of rare frankness and authenticity.
The terroir and vineyard
René Barbier, born into a French family of vignerons, discovered Priorat in 1979. Drawn to the potential of this little-known wine region, he acquired a property in Gratallops, a picturesque village in Priorat, restored the masia and replanted the vines, laying the foundations for Clos Mogador. The vineyard, planted as a single monoculture around the masia of Camí Manyetes, rests on the famous llicorella soils, the slate schists that characterise Priorat and impart a distinctive minerality to the wines, at approximately 350 metres altitude on the steep slopes of the Montsant massif. These fractured black schists are the absolute identity of Priorat: poor, well-draining and thermally active, they naturally concentrate the aromas of old vines and impress upon the wine that wet slate minerality immediately recognisable among all others. The Clos Mogador 2022 is a blend of varieties from this unique vineyard, principally Garnacha and Cariñena, with touches of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, whose proportion decreases progressively over the years as the vines are grafted to make more room for indigenous varieties. René Barbier's intention over the years has been to vinify fresher wines, with far less oak influence, giving greater prominence to Garnacha and Cariñena, to achieve a wine more pure, concentrated and subtle all at once. The wine fermented with 40 per cent whole bunches and is aged in oak foudres of 2,000 and 2,500 litres, some older to avoid excess new oak, with a portion finishing its ageing in concrete vat, for a total ageing of some 20 months. The bodega is committed to biodynamic agricultural practices, with permaculture, biofertilisers and soil work with animals to avoid compaction.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep ruby red, brilliant and luminous. The nose is very Mediterranean, with many notes of dry hay and straw, the classic wet slate notes so typical of Priorat. Aromas of blackcurrant, violet and dark cherry intertwine with earthy and leather notes that bring layered complexity. The fruit is fresh, refined Mediterranean aromatic herbs, thyme, rosemary, garrigue, enrich this bouquet with a striking depth and Catalan authenticity. The palate is round, with very fine and chalky tannins. It is serious and harmonious, relaxed, without any excess. The alcohol, at 14 per cent, is restrained and integrated, and the finish is very dry. It is a full-bodied wine, with an elegant yet powerful finish. A great wine for ageing, recommended between 2025 and 2038 according to Robert Parker.
The domaine
Clos Mogador was founded by René Barbier, visionary and leader of the Priorat revolution. Clos Mogador was among the first wines to obtain Vi de Finca certification in Catalonia, attesting to the unique origin of the grapes and the exceptional quality of the wine. Today, his children René IV, Céline, Christian and Andersen continue the family work with the same rigour and conviction as their father, to make Priorat one of the great red wine appellations of the world, allowing the llicorella soils and old vines to express themselves without artifice or excess.
Food pairings
This Priorat Gratallops pairs beautifully with roasted Catalan lamb with garrigue herbs, confited Iberian pork shoulder with spices, wild boar stew with wild berries, lamb rack with black olives and thyme, or a board of aged Iberian cheeses like old Manchego or Catalan Garrotxa. A minimum of two hours' decanting is essential in its youth. Served between 16 and 18 °C, it will progressively reveal all the mineral depth, aromatic purity and grandeur of a foundational Priorat.
