Grenache Gris and Maccabeu offer a lace-like style of crystalline minerality, a luminous white from the heart of Catalan schists.
The Llum 2023 from Roc des Anges is one of the finest whites of Roussillon, and certainly one of the most luminous and elegant dry whites in the southern French vineyard. Its name says it all: llum means "light" in Catalan — and that is precisely what this wine embodies, vintage after vintage. A light that illuminates without burning, that reveals without weighing, carried by centenarian Catalan vines on ancient schists of exceptional minerality.
The terroir and the vines
The Llum is born from an assemblage of 11 parcels of Grenache Gris and Maccabeu — completed with Grenache Blanc, Carignan Gris and Blanc, and Malvoisie — planted between 1919 and 2008 on the north-facing slope of Força Réal, in the village of Montner in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The due-north exposure is a founding decision by Marjorie Gallet, capital in this sun-soaked Roussillon: it slows ripeness, preserves natural acidity and gives the domaine's white wines a freshness and tension that evoke Burgundy rather than southern France. The soils, shallow and schistous, are born from the compression of pure clays rich in silica and iron — they behave like fine sands, drain perfectly, and force the roots of old vines to plunge deep into the rock to find there coolness and minerals. Natural yields, barely 15 hl/ha, are a voluntary constraint that concentrates the expression and aromatic intensity of each cuvée. The entire vineyard is certified in organic and biodynamic farming.
Tasting profile
The colour is golden with grey hues, pale and luminous, of brilliant clarity that announces the wine's elegance. The nose is of remarkable finesse and complexity for a white of the south: aromas of pear, lemon, white peach and almond blossom interweave with a flint minerality, notes of honeyed vanilla and a light spicy touch. Scents of white flowers and candied citrus enrich this bouquet in grace and restraint. On the palate, the wine is ethereal, taut and sculpted, with a perfect balance between richness and acidity that gives it both amplitude and freshness. The material is taut and precise, threaded through with a juicy and vibrant acidity, and the long finish leaves a mineral and saline impression of great purity. A white of rare finesse — lace, crystal and minerality, in the words of the domaine — to be enjoyed through 2031.
The domaine and its transmission
Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet founded Roc des Anges in 2001 at Latour-de-France, after a formative spell with Gérard Gauby. Starting from 10 hectares, they patiently built more than 40 hectares in biodynamics, raising Roussillon to the rank of great wine regions worldwide. At the end of 2023, they chose to entrust a significant portion of the domaine to Thibault Ponthier, whom they are supporting over several years to guarantee absolute continuity of philosophy, precision and the Catalan identity of the wines. A living heritage, passed on with care.
Food and wine pairings
This Llum is a wine of gastronomy par excellence. It will pair magnificently with scallops in citrus carpaccio, sea bass tartare with fresh herbs, grilled lobster with tarragon butter, delicate fish cooked en papillote, porcini risotto or capon braised with chestnuts and sweet spices. It will also find a beautiful harmony with aged goat cheese or an aged sheep's cheese from the Pyrenees. Served at 12 °C, it will reveal all the light and minerality of its Catalan terroir.
