The signature cuvée of Domaine Justin Girardin, this Santenay expresses itself through red fruit notes with a structure of remarkable finesse and natural aromatic spontaneity.
The Santenay Vieilles Vignes 2023 from Domaine Justin Girardin is the most representative and faithful expression of the domaine's identity, an assemblage of three distinct Santenay parcels unified by their age, exposure and clayey character, creating a Pinot Noir of elegance, finesse and aromatic spontaneity that perfectly embodies the signature of this vigneron of thirteen generations. The expression of a terroir, the finesse of a vigneron: the formula says it all.
The Terroir and Vines
This Santenay Vieilles Vignes springs from three distinct parcels spread across three different climates of the commune: one in the lower Bievaux, whose name echoes the Latin source Bedus, evoking the nearby watercourse, one on the Clos Genet, situated to the west of Santenay and said to have belonged to the widespread Genet family of Côte d'Or, and a third on the climat Sous la Roche, high on the slope, named after a vast calcareous cliff that overlooks it. These three parcels do not share exactly the same terroir, but present remarkably similar pedological characteristics and exposure: homogeneous south-easterly orientation and an argilo-calcareous soil with a clay-dominant character, relatively thin compared to certain Premiers Crus, which disciplines the vine and concentrates Pinot Noir expression. The vines, some fifty years old, produce naturally low yields around 45 hl/ha, which nourish the concentration and aromatic richness of the cuvée. Bottling is carried out on a favourable lunar day, in keeping with the domaine's biodynamic tradition.
Tasting Profile
The colour is a brilliant ruby with cherry highlights, of fine intensity. The nose is delicate and immediately expressive: spontaneous and generous fragrances of red and dark fruits, cherry, griottine, blackberry and raspberry, assert themselves naturally and seduce through their frankness, embellished with a light floral touch and a hint of sweet spices. On the palate, delicacy and finesse dominate from the outset: the texture is full and elegant, the tannins are silky and of great finesse, arising from an extraction conducted with rigour, cold maceration for five to seven days to extract primary aromas, rare punching-down in favour of frequent pump-overs to preserve the supple delicacy of the substance. The finish charms with its persistent floral note and mineral freshness, prolonging the wine with a lightness and grace typical of Santenay at its best. A wine accessible now in all its fruity liveliness, and capable of fine evolution over five to eight years.
The Domaine
The Girardin family has been established in Burgundy since 1570. Justin Girardin, thirteenth generation, took the reins of the family domaine of 17 hectares in 2012 from his father Jacques, brother of the celebrated négociant Vincent Girardin. Armed with several experiences abroad and in other French wine regions, he returned to Burgundy with solid expertise in viticulture to impose a resolutely modern mark on the domaine's wines: juices closer to the terroir from which they come, fermentations in indigenous yeasts, gentle extraction and twelve months of ageing in oak from the forests of Allier and Vosges with only 15% new wood, to always preserve the purity of fruit and truth of terroir in every glass. His philosophy is eloquently simple: let nature express itself as much as possible, and intervene with the least force and the most precision possible.
Food Pairing
This Santenay Vieilles Vignes pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb rack with Provençal herbs, farmyard poultry in cream, game birds such as roasted quail or partridge with cabbage, or country terrine with walnuts. It will also find harmony with aged cheeses such as Époisses, mature Cîteaux or aged Comté. Served between 15 and 16°C, it will reveal all the fruity finesse and natural elegance of a Pinot Noir from Santenay crafted with care and passion.
