Red and black fruits, spice and floral notes. A Premier Cru from Beaune of great elegance signed by Drouhin.
The Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 2022 from Domaine Joseph Drouhin is one of the most emblematic and mythical bottles in the entire House, a rare production that makes fantastic wines across every price range, offering a quality close to Grands Crus at decidedly lower prices. Rated 94 points by Bettane & Desseauve and 92-94 by William Kelley of the Wine Advocate, this 2022 is a very fine, noble wine, concentrated and full of freshness, its intense ruby colour reflecting the brilliance of the vintage. One hundred years after Maurice Drouhin patiently acquired the 41 parcels that make up the Clos, its centenary in 2021 is celebrated with this exceptional vintage.

The terroir and history of Clos des Mouches

At the far south of the Beaune appellation, bordering Pommard. A mid-slope parcel with gentle gradient, facing east/south-east. 14 hectares, the largest parcel of this climat, divided equally between red and white. The name comes from the fact that this sunny clos sheltered beehives, and bees were once called 'honey flies'. It was one of the very first vineyards acquired by Maurice Drouhin in the 1920s. With great determination, he managed to buy 41 different parcels from 8 different owners. This lieu-dit neighbouring Pommard, with varied soils ranging from limestone stones on the upper slope to marls in the centre, allows the production of wines of remarkable finesse. Vinification is carried out with 20 to 50% whole bunches depending on the vintage, two to three weeks of fermentation and maceration in small open vats punctuated by punchdowns and pump-overs, with indigenous yeasts. Ageing takes place in oak barrels with 25% new barrels, for 14 to 18 months.

Tasting profile

The 2022 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches reveals itself magnificently, unveiling aromas of sweet cherries, blackcurrant, liquorice and spice finely framed by toasted oak. Medium-bodied, rich and structured in layers, with a fleshy fruit core, succulent acidity and powdery tannins. Always as complex as a piece of fine lace, this Clos des Mouches opens on dried cranberries, rose petals, blueberry compote and a touch of forest floor. Fine tannins and lively acidity sustain the finish long and persistently. A very slender and silky Pinot Noir that glides across the palate with ripe cherries, cooked plums and a reserve of tart cherries that keep it bright and well-balanced. One of Drouhin's most consistent cuvées year after year.

The House

Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin at the age of 22, the domaine has expanded over time to reach today 80 hectares spread across prestigious appellations. Forward-thinking, this family has been defending the respect of terroir and the environment since 1957. Organic farming since 1990, then biodynamic a few years later. Maison Joseph Drouhin is now run since 2003 by the four children of Robert Drouhin. This famous Beaune house of international reputation rests on a vineyard of 72 hectares, distributed between 26 hectares of red and 46 hectares of white. Throughout ageing, decisions are guided by weekly tastings, barrel by barrel, with a constant objective: finesse, expression of terroir and respect for the vintage.

Food pairings

This Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge will pair beautifully with a fillet of beef with ceps, duck with cherries, a rack of lamb with Provençal herbs, roasted guinea fowl with morels, or game birds such as partridge. It will also find fine harmony with aged cheeses such as Époisses or old Comté. Decanting for 30 minutes is advised in its youth. Served between 15 and 17 °C, it will reveal all the complexity, lace-like finesse and depth of a century-old Premier Cru from Beaune.
