A compelling Pinot Noir from Domaine François Mikulski. Fruity and floral with notes of cherry and soft spice, this is supple, elegant and very approachable.
The Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir 2024 from Domaine François Mikulski is the domaine's red gateway wine, and like its white counterpart, it makes no compromises. Grown on vines cultivated with an organic ethos on the immediate outskirts of Meursault, this Pinot Noir receives the same meticulous care and uncompromising philosophy as the Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu, in the caves carved into the rock that François Mikulski and his son-in-law Thomas Boccon cherish. An honest, precise and crunchy red Bourgogne that speaks volumes about a domaine guided by authenticity and purity.
Terroir and vineyard
This Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir comes from parcels around the village of Meursault, on the typical clay and limestone soils of the Côte de Beaune foothills. This well-draining limestone substrate, naturally rich in minerals, is particularly suited to Pinot Noir, conferring natural tension, fresh acidity and precise aromatic definition that characterise the finest red Burgundies of the Côte. The vines are cultivated in natural organic agriculture without official certification, using homemade compost, tilling and environmentally respectful products, yielding controlled harvests of no more than 35 hl per hectare, well below authorised limits. Grapes are fully destemmed and vinified in tank for 15 to 18 days with indigenous yeasts, using measured punch-downs and pump-overs for gentle extraction of tannins and aromas, then aged in oak with a modest proportion of new wood before bottling after approximately twelve months of ageing.
Tasting profile
The colour is a bright and luminous ruby with violet reflections, displaying the beautiful transparency characteristic of Pinot Noirs made without excessive extraction. The nose is frank, direct and immediately seductive, with aromas of fresh red fruits, raspberry, cherry and redcurrant, expressing themselves with spontaneity and crunch, accompanied by a delicate violet floral note and a discreet spicy hint. On the palate, the wine is supple, fruity and highly drinkable. The attack is clean and fruity, the tannins fine and silky, and the fresh, well-integrated acidity brings tension and definition to a light and elegant palate. The finish is clean, fruity and slightly mineral, with the naturalness and sincerity that are the domaine's signature at every level. A red Burgundy of pleasure and character, to be opened without ceremony but with the care that every good vigneron's wine deserves.
The domaine
François Mikulski founded his domaine in Meursault with his wife Marie-Pierre in 1991, with the first vintage in 1992. Son of a Polish lieutenant of Free France, Mieczyslaw Mikulski, who escaped occupied Poland in 1939 to join the Free French Forces in England where he met his future Burgundian wife, he has built over more than thirty years one of the most respected and sought-after domaines in the Burgundy vineyard. Today, his son-in-law Thomas Boccon runs the domaine alongside him, perpetuating with the same care and conviction this path of excellence. As François likes to say, 'A good wine is a wine that is drunk.' A simple yet profound philosophy that guides every decision, from vineyard to glass, with a consistency and humility that are the true mark of great vignerons.
Food and wine pairing
This Bourgogne Côte d'Or Pinot Noir will pair beautifully with a board of fine charcuterie, Burgundian jambon persillé, œufs en meurette, roasted chicken with herbs, fresh pasta with wild mushrooms or a board of soft cheeses such as Brie de Meaux or young Époisses. Lightly chilled to around 14–15°C, it will also be perfect as an aperitif, in the direct and sincere spirit that is the hallmark of this cuvée.
