Floral and fruity with citrus and white fruit notes, this Côtes du Rhône Blanc from La Ferme du Mont is fresh, elegant, and wonderfully approachable.
The Côtes du Rhône Blanc La Truffière 2024 from La Ferme du Mont is the most ambitious white from Stéphane Vedeau's biodynamic domaine, and one of the most distinctive white cuvées of the southern Rhône. Positioned among the great whites of the Rhône Valley and southern Burgundy, it combines finesse, balance, and character. A jade hue melting into golden blonde, a floral and mineral nose of remarkable richness that prepares the palate for complexity. The wine surprises with its amplitude, moving between creamy richness and elegant nervosity.
The terroir and vines>
La Truffière takes its name from the domaine's truffle grove, a stand of truffle oaks bordering the white parcels whose influence on soil and microclimate is directly perceptible in the wine's aromatic profile. The vineyard sits on limestone scree on a cool, shaded slope, radically different from the gravelly, south-facing terroirs of the red cuvées. This cool, shaded exposure combined with limestone scree creates the mineral, fresh, and elegant character that distinguishes this white from all other southern Rhône expressions. The blend comprises Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne, with Clairette and Grenache Blanc added according to vintage, all from vines certified organic since 2014 and farmed biodynamically since 2011. Winemaking is precise and minimal: indigenous yeasts exclusively, ageing on fine lees in subtle balance between concrete and neutral oak to preserve natural freshness while adding complexity and texture.
Tasting profile>
The colour is jade melting into luminous golden blonde. The nose offers floral and mineral notes of striking richness and precision, delicate florals, pronounced limestone minerality, quince and yellow peach, with touches of acacia honey and pronounced spice. On the palate, La Truffière is rich and complex, offering creamy sweetness balanced by lively freshness and subtle minerality that brings elegance and harmony. The amplitude between richness and elegant tension is remarkable, with multiple aromatic layers of quince paste, yellow fruits, spice, acacia honey, and limestone minerality unfolding progressively with a complexity and persistence that recalls the great whites of southern Burgundy.
The domaine>
La Ferme du Mont is Stéphane Vedeau's Rhône domaine. A former professional footballer who turned to wine in 1989 after fifteen years in Languedoc, Vedeau settled in the Rhône Valley in 2000. Praised from his first vintages by Robert Parker as one of the talented young turks and a seriously gifted winemaker of the southern Rhône, he produces natural wines of absolute precision and honesty, using indigenous yeasts and biodynamic methods.
Food pairings>
This Côtes du Rhône Blanc La Truffière pairs beautifully with shellfish, elaborate vegetable dishes, soft cheese, light cream-based poultry, seared scallops with truffle butter, roasted turbot with Provençal herbs, or truffle and parmesan risotto. Served between 10 and 12 °C, with light decanting recommended, it will reveal the full floral complexity, limestone minerality, and natural elegance of a southern Rhône biodynamic white of absolute singularity and precision.
