Red fruits and light spice from La Ferme du Mont, this Côtes du Rhône is fresh, supple, and deeply approachable. A wine that invites immediate pleasure.
The Côtes du Rhône Mademoiselle du Mont 2024 from La Ferme du Mont is the most direct and inviting expression from Stéphane Vedeau's biodynamic domaine, awarded 90 points by Wine Enthusiast for the 2023 vintage. A long, light yet enveloping robe. Crisp aromas of fruit and spice rise from the glass. The spiced curves of Grenache, mellowed by Mourvèdre and Syrah, meet the mineral voices of sandstone and rolled stones, draped delicately in clay and sand. What could be more sensual or elegant? A Côtes du Rhône built for immediate pleasure and genuine generosity, made for daily drinking and sharing.
Terroir and vines
The Mademoiselle du Mont vineyard centres on a deep alluvial clay-limestone deposit with large rounded stones, on varied south, south-west and north-east facing slopes that allow harmonious, progressive ripening across the different varieties. This diversity of aspect is precisely what creates the natural complexity and balance of this cuvée: south-facing parcels bring Grenache's generosity and ripeness, while north-east exposures preserve the natural freshness and vivacity of Syrah and Mourvèdre. The blend comprises 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% old Carignan from vines averaging sixty years old, certified organic since 2014 and farmed biodynamically since 2011. Winemaking follows Burgundian principles: open concrete vats, 95% destemmed with 5% whole bunches, gentle and infrequent cap management to build fine-grained tannins. Each variety is vinified separately, then blended after malolactic fermentation. Ageing is principally in concrete, with 10% of the final volume in barrel to add complexity.
Tasting profile
The robe is deep, sustained purple with brilliant violet reflections. The nose is expressive and seductive: wild blackberry, black pepper and liquorice emerge with forthright clarity, accompanied by fresh dark fruit and the sweet spice characteristic of ripe Grenache. On the palate, the wine is fleshy and enveloping, with silky tannins born of gentle, respectful extraction. The roundness of dominant Grenache is tempered by Syrah's freshness and Mourvèdre's spice, in a natural balance of remarkable harmony and drinkability. The finish is fruited, spiced and persistent, with a length and generosity that far exceed expectations for a Côtes du Rhône at this level.
The domaine
La Ferme du Mont is Stéphane Vedeau's Rhône Valley property. A former professional footballer who turned to wine in 1989 after fifteen years in Languedoc, he settled in the Rhône Valley in 2000 and has been praised by Robert Parker for the freshness and soul of his wines. He produces natural wines of absolute precision and honesty, using indigenous yeasts and biodynamic methods in respect of terroir and living systems. La Ferme du Mont's range extends from this accessible Côtes du Rhône to the most ambitious Châteauneuf-du-Pape, pursued with the same conviction and care at every level.
Food pairings
This Côtes du Rhône Mademoiselle du Mont pairs beautifully with grilled red meat, wood-fired pizza, homemade pasta bolognaise, fine charcuterie, grilled Provençal vegetables, lamb tagine with prunes, or soft cheeses such as Pélardon or Brie de Meaux. Served at 15 to 16°C, lightly chilled, it will reveal all the fruited generosity, spiced elegance and natural drinkability of a biodynamic Côtes du Rhône made with care and conviction.
