Ripe red fruits, spices and garrigue from old-vine Grenache. A generous, warm red from the Gard signed by Clos des Centenaires, supple and deeply pleasurable.
The Pays d'Oc Grenache Vieilles Vignes 2023 from Clos des Centenaires is a pure Grenache born in Vauvert, at the gates of the Camargue, between land and sea, from the work of Stéphanie and Luc Baudet. This 100% Grenache could put many Châteauneuf du Pape to shame. A refined, precise and dynamic Grenache, with red fruits, warm spices and a long peppery finish.
Terroir and vines
Clos des Centenaires spreads across 7 hectares on a hillock of Villafranchian rolled pebbles in Vauvert, within the Costières de Nîmes appellation. The vineyard, close to ponds, the Rhône and the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate with continental influence. This favourable terroir yields gourmand, fresh and digestible wines, rare characteristics for the region. The project began with a meeting between two vignerons, Luc Baudet and Bruno François, united by their passion for artisanal wines and the terroir of the southern Rhône. The vines are managed using only products permitted by organic standards, with natural cover crops, shallow ploughing and biodynamic compost prepared each year. The old-vine Grenache is vinified as whole bunches in concrete vats without destemming, then aged in stoneware eggs.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep red with violet hues. The nose is gourmand, marked by cooked fruits, raspberry compote and griottine, red cherry, dried orange peel and pepper, with soft spices and dried flowers. The palate is round, medium to full-bodied, with supple, velvety and generous tannins, and generous fruit carried by a thread of spice that gives it vitality. The finish is smooth and long, peppery, with roasted hazelnut aromas.
The domaine
Stéphanie and Luc Baudet cultivate their land with the utmost respect, allowing nature to express itself fully, to create wines characteristic of this terroir between land and sea. The cuvées from Clos des Centenaires, which also include Cinsault, Syrah and blends, share this freshness and gourmandise rare for the region.
Food pairing
This Grenache pairs beautifully with grilled veal kidneys, lamb, beef, daube, or simply as an aperitif. Served between 16 and 18°C, it can be enjoyed now for its fruit, or cellared for several years.
