From the En Lutenière lieu-dit on the heights of the Côte de Nuits. Red fruits, freshness and minerality. Precise and very elegant.
The Bourgogne En Lutenière 2023 from Domaine Benoît Chevallier is one of the domaine's most engaging cuvées, and without question one of its most singular at this level. Behind the regional Bourgogne appellation lies a well-kept secret: the En Lutenière parcel sits physically within the commune boundaries of Vosne-Romanée, that legendary village home to Romanée-Conti and the world's greatest wines. An administrative boundary accident, drawn in 1936, placed this lieu-dit just outside the communal appellation line. The terroir itself has not moved one inch.

The En Lutenière lieu-dit

En Lutenière is a parcel situated south-east of Vosne-Romanée, on the silty and clay-limestone soils characteristic of the Côte de Nuits piedmont. Until 1936, this parcel was classified as Vosne-Romanée village appellation in its own right. The redrawing of appellations relegated it to regional Bourgogne status, without its terroir or surroundings changing in the slightest. It enjoys the same exposure, the same subsoil and the same microclimate as its neighbours in the communal appellation. For discerning collectors, this administrative anomaly is precisely what makes it a rare opportunity: to access the soul of Vosne-Romanée at a price that does not yet reflect its prestige. At Benoît Chevallier, the parcel is farmed in organic agriculture with the same care as his Premier Crus.

Tasting profile

The colour is a clear and luminous ruby, with beautiful transparency. The nose is fine, precise and immediately seductive, with aromas of ripe red fruits, raspberry, cherry, small wild berries, accompanied by delicate floral notes and a hint of soft spice. On the palate, the wine reveals itself elegant and balanced, with a supple, fruity texture, tannins of great finesse and fresh acidity that brings tension and length. The finish is clean, fruity and slightly mineral, with that airy and precise character that unmistakably recalls the Vosne origins of this parcel. A wine of pleasure and character, both accessible in its youth and promising over several years of ageing.

The domaine

Benoît Chevallier founded his domaine in 2019 by taking over family land cultivated for three generations in Vosne-Romanée. A former software engineer, he now devotes himself entirely to the management of his vineyards, including Premier Cru parcels in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. From his first vintage, the domaine was honoured with the Young Talents Trophy and praised by Wine Advocate as one of the rare new talents to emerge in Vosne-Romanée in recent years. Organic viticulture is practised across the entire domaine, with a constant ambition to reveal, vintage after vintage, the purity and sincerity of each terroir.

Food pairings

This Bourgogne En Lutenière will pair beautifully with poultry terrine with herbs, roasted chicken with wild mushrooms, fresh pasta with truffle, Burgundian ham in parsley jelly or a selection of soft cheeses such as Brie or Chaource. Lightly chambered around 15-16°C, it will also be excellent as an aperitif, served with a few slices of fine charcuterie.
