From the lieu-dit En Lutenière, on the heights of the Côte de Nuits. Red fruits, freshness and minerality. Precise and very elegant.
The Bourgogne En Lutenière 2023 from Domaine Benoît Chevallier is one of the most compelling cuvées from the domaine, and without doubt one of the most singular of its rank. Because behind the regional Bourgogne appellation lies a closely guarded secret: the En Lutenière parcel is physically situated within the boundaries of the commune of Vosne-Romanée, that mythical village which shelters Romanée-Conti and the greatest crus in the world. An accident of administrative borders, drawn in 1936, placed this lieu-dit just outside the communal appellation line. The terroir itself has not moved.
The lieu-dit En Lutenière
En Lutenière is a parcel planted to the south-east of Vosne-Romanée, on silty and argilo-calcareous soils characteristic of the piedmont of the Côte de Nuits. Until 1936, this parcel was classified as Vosne-Romanée village appellation in its own right. The reshuffling of appellations relegated it to the rank of regional Bourgogne, without its terroir or surroundings changing one iota. It benefits from the same exposure, the same subsoil and the same microclimate as its neighbours in the communal appellation. For discerning enthusiasts, it is precisely this administrative anomaly that makes it a rare opportunity: to access the soul of Vosne-Romanée at a price that does not yet reflect its prestige. At Benoît Chevallier, the parcel is managed in organic farming with the same care as his Premiers Crus.
Tasting profile
The colour is a clear and luminous ruby, with fine transparency. The nose is refined, precise and immediately seductive, with aromas of ripe red fruits, raspberry, cherry, wild berries, accompanied by delicate floral notes and a whisper of soft spices. On the palate, the wine reveals itself elegant and well-balanced, with a supple and fruity texture, tannins of great finesse and fresh acidity that brings tension and length. The finish is clean, fruity and lightly mineral, with that airy and precise character that unmistakably recalls the Vosne origins of this parcel. A wine of pleasure and character, at once accessible in its youth and promising for several years of keeping.
The domaine
Benoît Chevallier founded his domaine in 2019 by taking over family lands cultivated for three generations in Vosne-Romanée. A former software engineer, he now devotes himself entirely to managing his vineyards, including parcels in Premier Cru on Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. From his first vintage, the domaine was awarded the Trophy for Young Talents and hailed by Wine Advocate as one of the rare new talents to have emerged in Vosne-Romanée in recent years. Organic viticulture is practised across the entire domaine, with a constant ambition to reveal, vintage after vintage, the purity and integrity of each terroir.
Food pairing
This Bourgogne En Lutenière will pair beautifully with poultry terrine with herbs, roasted chicken with wild mushrooms, fresh pasta with truffle, Burgundian parsley ham or a selection of soft cheeses such as Brie or Chaource. Lightly chambered around 15–16 °C, it will also be excellent as an aperitif, served with a few slices of fine charcuterie.
