Delicate Japanese botanicals, citrus, sansho and yuzu distilled in a Coffey column still. An original and refined gin, excellent in cocktails or served neat as an aperitif.
Nikka Coffey Gin is a singular Japanese signature, distilled in the same historic Coffey column stills used for the house's celebrated single grain whisky, and enriched with a palette of rare Japanese citrus fruits.
A bottling from Nikka, crafted from corn and malted barley distillates produced in the Coffey column stills at Miyagikyo distillery, then redistilled with juniper berries and a selection of Japanese citrus including yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu and shikuwasa, along with sansho pepper. This gin is bottled at 47 percent ABV. Nikka remains one of the two great founding houses of Japanese whisky, and this Coffey Gin carries forward a rare tradition of continuous distillation inherited directly from its historic stills.
Ageing and origins
Distilled from corn and malted barley bases passed through Coffey column stills, this gin marries the round, textured richness of continuous distillation with the tart freshness of carefully selected Japanese citrus. The addition of yuzu, kabosu, amanatsu and shikuwasa, four distinctly Japanese citrus varieties, brings rare aromatic complexity, while sansho pepper adds a subtle spicy note with the characteristic tingle of Japanese cuisine. Miyagikyo, located near Sendai in northern Japan, was founded in 1969 by Masataka Taketsuru, founder of Nikka and father of Japanese whisky.
Tasting profile
On the nose, an explosion of lime and orange blossom emerges with great intensity, evolving toward creamy coconut, abundant juniper, grey pepper and rose berries, with a stone fruit core of apricot. On the palate, the attack is both vibrant and silky, revealing aromatic plants such as sage and verbena. The mid-palate is dominated by citrus, notably lemon, along with ripe fruits like apple and pear, before being overtaken by strong spices of anise and fresh ginger. The finish is salivating, evoking the sensation of chewing liquorice, with a grassy character reminiscent of green tea and mint infusion, and a touch of bitter orange that brings brightness to the aftertaste.
The house
Nikka is one of the two great historic houses of Japanese whisky, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru following his apprenticeship in Scotland. Its Coffey stills, acquired in 1963 and still in use today at Miyagikyo distillery, bear witness to a rare commitment to the traditional craft of continuous distillation, here reinvented to create a resolutely Japanese gin.
Tasting and food pairing
This Nikka Coffey Gin is best enjoyed in cocktails, particularly a Gin Tonic with a slice of yuzu or lime to fully reveal its citrus freshness and spicy roundness. It also works beautifully in more elaborate cocktails that showcase the Japanese citrus. It pairs well with sashimi, lightly spiced Asian cuisine, seafood or citrus pastries, whose freshness responds beautifully to the tart vivacity and spicy complexity characteristic of this gin.
