White peach, apricot, and mountain flowers with silky texture and alpine minerality. Honeyed, delicate finish. Sunny and precise Chignin.
The Chignin-Bergeron Grand Zeph 2025 from Domaine Adrien Berlioz is undoubtedly the domaine's greatest cuvée and one of the finest expressions of Roussanne in Savoie, rated 94/100 by Revue du Vin de France. Zeph is the nickname of Adrien's grandfather. This cuvée comes from the lieu-dit Les Côtes, considered one of the warmest spots in the area. This grand wine reveals intense fruit centred on yellow fruits, with remarkable minerality. The balance is superb. This is a bottle you don't open every day, but when the occasion arrives, the moment becomes unique and singular.
Terroir and vineyards
These young Roussannes are planted on Les Côtes, a limonous and chalky terroir set on friable rocks with full south exposure. The hillsides slope at over 40%, all managed biodynamically. The Grand Zeph cuvée comes from Chignin-Bergeron's warmest terroir, where Roussanne flourishes and gives the wine extraordinary minerality. The vertiginous 40% slope demands exclusively manual labour with no mechanical equipment, creating natural thermal and hydric stress that concentrates the grapes with an intensity flat terroirs cannot replicate. The parcel contains 8,000 vines per hectare with a yield of 35 hl/ha. Harvesting is manual with grapes transported in crates to prevent damage. Vinification includes pneumatic pressing under inert gas, fermentation and ageing in tank with stirring for 6 to 8 months. The domaine has been certified organic since 2012 and Demeter biodynamic since 2020.
Tasting profile
The 2025 vintage in Savoie, fresh and precise, promises wines of striking tension and minerality on high-altitude whites. From the first nose, marked mineral character fills the glass, followed by floral and exotic notes, fresh spices such as white pepper and hibiscus. On the palate, mineral tension reaches its peak, wrapped in a soft, balanced texture. The wine expresses all the complexity of its terroir, combining ripe yellow fruit, dried fruit notes, and floral nuances. A subtle hint of curry adds depth and aromatic layering. The palate shows rich, complex structure, its generosity supported by superb freshness and perfectly balanced minerality.
The domaine
Adrien Berlioz, young cousin and neighbour of Gilles Berlioz, established himself in 2006. Demanding and rigorous, he manages his vineyards biodynamically with Demeter certification since 2020, including those on the steepest slopes. With 14 different cuvées across just over 5 hectares, quantities are very limited and these artisanal wines are difficult to find. These cuvées are contemporary yet deeply rooted in Savoyard identity, ageing with grace.
Food pairings
A grand white wine for fine dining, serve with aged Savoyard cheeses, creamed poultry, or mushroom risotto. Drink now for its generosity, or cellar for 8 to 10 years for added complexity. Pairs beautifully with roasted turbot with Roussanne cuttings, pan-seared scallops with truffle butter, veal sweetbreads with morels and cream, or Beaufort d'alpage aged 24 months. Serve between 10 and 12°C to reveal the spiced depth, mineral tension, and sunny generosity of Chignin-Bergeron Roussanne at its finest.
