Red and black fruits, spice and forest floor. A precise and generous Gevrey village from Arlaud, structured and open.
The Gevrey-Chambertin 2023 from Domaine Arlaud is the domaine's signature village cuvée from one of Burgundy's most celebrated appellations, a Pinot Noir of remarkable expressiveness and sincerity, born from a thoughtful blend of two complementary parcels that expresses with fidelity and elegance the distinct character of Gevrey-Chambertin. The entire vineyard has been Demeter certified since 2014, and the wines are radiant, proof that seeking power through extraction is pointless. Healthy, ripe Pinot Noirs make the finest of raw materials.
The terroir and parcels
Two parcels compose this cuvée, the lieu-dit "Les Seuvrées" and "La Justice". Les Seuvrées yields more elegant wines, while La Justice plays a more muscular hand. This duality is precisely what gives this Gevrey-Chambertin village its distinctive complexity and balance. Gevrey-Chambertin wines oscillate between musk, spice and fruit. Les Seuvrées brings floral finesse and lightness evoking the boundary with Morey-Saint-Denis, the domaine's territory of choice, while La Justice contributes a squarer structure, firmer tannins and an aromatic depth that roots the wine in the appellation's affirmed character. This Gevrey-Chambertin is produced from a parcel of roughly one hectare with vines around thirty years old. It is aged in oak for 14 to 18 months with 25 per cent new wood. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, free-run and press juices are kept separate at pressing, and bottling takes place without fining or filtration, following the rhythm of the moon.
Tasting profile
On the nose, it delivers meaty aromas intertwined with fruity ones, blackcurrant in particular, and fine oaked notes. The palate shows great delicacy in the texture and fineness of the tannins, with freshness and good aromatic persistence. The red wines offer aromas of ripe red and black fruits, cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry, accompanied by floral, spicy and lightly oaked notes. With age, they develop complex nuances of forest floor, truffle and leather. The Demeter-certified biodynamics reads in the glass with a candour and natural vitality, tannins of great fineness, precise and well-integrated acidity, and that vibrant, radiant character peculiar to vines cultivated with absolute care for soil health. A wine accessible from today and capable of fine evolution over five to eight years.
The domaine
The origins of Domaine Arlaud trace back to World War II, when Ardèche native Joseph Arlaud met and married Renée Amiot, a Burgundian whose family owned vineyards. In 1982, their son Hervé took over and developed the bottling operation. The third generation, Bertille, Cyprien and Romain, now manage the estate with an unwavering conviction: healthy, high-quality grapes are sufficient to aim for excellence. Cyprien is convinced of biodynamics, which he introduced upon his arrival at the domaine. Now accompanied by his sister Bertille, the domaine pushes further in soil work by incorporating horse ploughing. The entire vineyard has been Demeter certified since 2014. The domaine spans 15 hectares across 19 appellations, including 4 Grand Crus.
Food pairings
This Gevrey-Chambertin pairs beautifully with beef roasted with wild mushrooms, rabbit stewed with olives and herbs, roasted lamb rack, fine country terrine or a plate of aged cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. Served between 15 and 17°C, with light decanting advised, it will reveal all the fruity candour, the tannin finesse and the musk-spice-fruit typicity of a Gevrey-Chambertin village vinified with care and biodynamic conviction.
