Red and dark fruits, spice and earthy notes. A structured and generous Nuits with firm tannins and fine aromatic persistence.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 2023 from Cyprien Arlaud is the flagship village cuvée of this appellation in the négociant range, a Pinot Noir of remarkable fullness and the typical generosity of Nuits, drawn from two complementary parcels whose vines are entirely farmed by the domaine team according to biodynamic principles. Now leading the family domaine, Cyprien Arlaud produces great wines from meticulous and healthy viticulture, certified organic since 2004 and biodynamic since 2009.
The terroir and the vines
This Nuits-Saint-Georges comes from two parcels: 50% Petite Charmotte and 50% Les Argillats. These two lieux-dits in the northern part of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation offer complementary soil profiles that nourish the richness and complexity of the cuvée. Petite Charmotte, on clay-limestone soils, brings the roundness, generosity and fleshy character typical of the appellation, while Les Argillats, on more clayey soils, contributes the structure, spice and mineral depth characteristic of the Côte de Nuits. The Pinot Noir comes from old vines planted in 1959, farmed biodynamically on clay-limestone soils. The domaine team handles all tasks from pruning to harvest. Manual harvest with controlled yields. 100% destemmed vinification, gentle pressing, 16 months ageing in oak with 25% new barrels. Bottled without fining or filtration, following lunar cycles.
Tasting profile
This Nuits-Saint-Georges displays a deep ruby colour. Its fruity nose is particularly pleasant, revealing black cherry nuances enhanced by a spicy touch. On the palate, it distinguishes itself through its fullness and generosity, paired with remarkable balance that extends to an elegant finish. The tasting reveals a profound wine whose fruit is complemented by lightly spicy notes and structured by silky tannins. The wines present bright aromas of black cherry, fresh raspberry and violet, supported by a finely spiced and mineral framework. The palates are full, velvety, carried by silky tannins and fine tension. A frank, direct Nuits-Saint-Georges of great drinkability, approachable now and capable of fine evolution over five to eight years.
The domaine
Cyprien Arlaud represents the third generation of Domaine Arlaud, founded in 1942 from the meeting of Burgundian Renée Amiot and Ardéchois Joseph Arlaud. In 2013, Cyprien took over from his father Hervé and has run the domaine biodynamically since 2009, becoming the first Biodyvin-certified domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2014. Aided in the vineyards by his sister Bertille, who founded a horse-ploughing company, he produces wines of precision and purity that quickly won over the international press and collectors. Since 2012, his passion for Burgundian terroirs in their diversity has led him to develop a négociant activity under the Cyprien Arlaud label, for which his team farms the vines from pruning to harvest with the same biodynamic rigour as the family domaine.
Food and wine pairings
This Nuits-Saint-Georges pairs beautifully with braised veal shank with herbs, beef fillet with wild mushrooms, slow-cooked beef bourguignon, rack of lamb with Provençal herbs or venison in sauce. It will also harmonise well with aged cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. Served between 16 and 17 °C, it will reveal all the fruity fullness and fleshy typicity of an old vine Nuits-Saint-Georges vinified with care and conviction.
