A fine Pinot Noir from Sancerre with red fruit, spice, and subtle minerality. Precise and delicate, with lovely aromatic elegance from Domaine du Pré Semelé.
The Sancerre Rouge Mainbré 2023 from Domaine du Pré Semelé is one of the most appealing and accomplished cuvées from this new-generation Sancerre domaine, run with skill and conviction by brothers Julien and Clément Raimbault. An intense Pinot Noir with a generous red fruit nose and a soft, silky palate, its well-integrated tannins are supported by Sancerre's characteristic freshness, which makes this red particularly remarkable. In the exceptional 2023 vintage for Sancerre, this wine reveals a more relaxed expression, more approachable and generous, while retaining the precision that defines the domaine's signature.

Terroir and vineyard

Mainbré comes from parcels around the village of Maimbré in Sancerre, on clay-limestone soils with iron content characteristic of this southern part of the appellation. These ferruginous red clays give Pinot Noir a depth, structure, and aromatic richness that sets it apart from lighter expressions of this variety on Caillottes or Terres Blanches. The vines, over 30 years old, grow on this ferruginous clay-limestone substrate that brings body and concentration. Viticulture is reasoned and close to organic, without herbicides or chemical treatments. Harvesting is done by hand. Winemaking is precise and terroir-respecting: no added sulphur during fermentation, three weeks of maceration for gentle and progressive extraction of tannins and aromas, without enzymes. Ageing lasts 12 months in various containers, wooden barrels and vats, for subtle and well-integrated oak that preserves the Pinot Noir's freshness.

Tasting profile

The colour is a luminous ruby red with violet reflections, bright and appealing. The nose is intense and generous, true to the character of this lieu-dit on ferruginous clays: aromas of ripe red fruits, cherry, raspberry and morello cherry, open with frankness and generosity, accompanied by a light spicy note and subtle earthy minerality that marks the clayey terroir. In the sunny 2023 vintage, with remarkable ripeness, the fruits express themselves with striking density and generosity. The palate is generous and silky, with well-integrated tannins of velvety texture. Sancerre's characteristic freshness runs through the palate with elegance and liveliness, bringing tension and length to rich, concentrated fruit. The finish is fruity, spicy and persistent, with remarkable length and drinkability. A Sancerre red of fine complexity, accessible now and capable of evolving over five to eight years.

The domaine

Domaine du Pré Semelé sits in a small valley a few kilometres north-west of Sancerre. It is run by the third generation of the Raimbault family: brothers Julien and Clément, vineyard manager and winemaker, guided by their father Rémy, who has worked these vineyards for decades alongside his brother Claude. Trained at the houses of the Pinard brothers and Alphonse Mellot, two great references in the Sancerre vineyard, they work 21 hectares on varied clay-limestone terroirs. La Revue du Vin de France celebrates their recent evolution towards more natural and generous wines, while maintaining the technical precision that has been their trademark from the start.

Food pairing

This Sancerre Rouge Mainbré pairs beautifully with roasted Bresse chicken with herbs, rabbit with mustard, rack of lamb with Provençal herbs, fine country terrine, or aged goat cheeses such as Crottin de Chavignol or Pélardon. Its natural freshness and silky delicate tannins allow it to be served slightly cool between 14 and 16°C, to fully enjoy the fruity liveliness and mineral tension of this Sancerre Pinot Noir.
