The Chinon rouge Silènes 2023 from Domaine Charles Joguet is a fruit driven wine through and through, a juicy and easy drinking Cabernet Franc born on the siliceous plateau of Beaumont en Véron. Grown on sandy and gravelly soils, this vintage offers aromas of crisp red fruit and a fresh finish: an accessible Chinon that expresses all the generosity of the grape, a wine of pleasure that combines richness with bright fruit.
The terroir and the vines
Ten hectares of vines planted in 1988 on the siliceous plateau of Beaumont en Véron, between the Loire and the Vienne, form the most homogeneous parcel of the estate. The average yield is 45 hl/ha. The wine is a blend of the Beaumont vines and, depending on the vintage, free run and pressed wines from the alluvial soils of the left bank, creating an original harmony of aroma and substance. The vineyard is farmed organically. The grapes are destemmed without crushing, undergo a five day cold skin maceration, then a rapid fermentation at no more than 25 °C over ten days, sometimes halted before all the sugars are converted, in order to preserve the fruit. 2023 is a great vintage in Chinon: a dry summer followed by a rainy September, with no spring frost, producing wines of fine quality that combine concentration and mineral freshness, with exceptional ageing potential.
Tasting profile
The colour is an intense purple. The nose is crunchy, with fresh red fruit, violet, elderberry and a hint of apple. On the palate the wine is juicy, with a generous texture and a finely sculpted structure, with a layer of fresh humus that lifts the whole. The finish is fresh and easy drinking, lightly peppery, with supple tannins.
The estate
A pioneer of parcel specific Chinon, Domaine Charles Joguet has vinified each plot separately since the 1950s. Its thirty five hectares, thirty two of them red, all Cabernet Franc, and three of white Chenin, are laid out as a mosaic of parcels that gives its wines remarkable variety, from fruit forward wines for drinking young to great wines for long ageing. The estate is now run by winemaker Kevin Fontaine.
Food and wine pairing
This Chinon pairs well with cured meats, rillettes, roast poultry, grilled dishes, pork, everyday home cooking or goat's cheese. Served at around 14 to 16 °C, slightly chilled, it is best enjoyed young for its fruit, though it can also be kept for a few years.
