Fine red fruits, spice and limestone minerality. A precise and elegant Pinot Noir from the Bollenberg, signed Camille Braun, supple, fresh and delicately poised.
The Alsace Pinot Noir Bollenberg Neuberg 2024 from Domaine Camille Braun is one of Alsace's most vertical Pinot Noirs, from the lieu-dit Neuberg, on the ridge edge of the Bollenberg hill. A taut and nervous red wine, uncompromising, seeking not roundness but precision and tension.
Terroir and vineyard
The Bollenberg is a dry, sun-exposed hill with clay-limestone soils, forming a narrow tongue between the Vosges and the Rhine plain, south of Colmar. Sheltered from the clouds held back by the ridge, it enjoys a particularly dry, warm and föhn climate, where Pinot Noir thrives. Neuberg is one of the most remarkable lieu-dits of the cru, on the ridge edge it yields Pinot Noirs of great verticality, with distinctly chalky soil. The vines are certified organic and biodynamic (Demeter and Biodyvin), with hand harvesting. Winemaking follows the Demeter and Biodyvin charter, using indigenous yeasts, and is carried out essentially in stainless steel, respecting the fruit and without additives.
Tasting profile
The robe is a luminous cherry red. The nose is taut: tart cherry, redcurrant, pomegranate peel, cool stone, with a mineral line evoking wet limestone. On the palate, everything is about structure: a fine but very present acidity, a narrower than broad body, an elegant tannin frame, and a taut, salivating finish. The fruit is controlled, the aromatics chiselled, with a very clear limestone sensation.
The domaine
Heirs to a winemaking tradition stretching back to the 17th century, Christophe and Chantal Braun, third generation of Domaine Camille Braun, run some fifteen hectares of vineyard in Orschwihr, the first wine town when approaching the Alsatian vineyard from the south, sheltered by the Grand Ballon and Petit Ballon. The domaine is recognised for the precision and elegance of its lieu-dit wines, in both white and red.
Food and wine pairing
This Pinot Noir pairs well with red meat, savoury pies, quiches, grilled dishes and cheese. Served between 14 and 16 °C, it can be enjoyed now for its tension, or will gain in complexity with further bottle ageing.
