The Chinon Blanc Les Petites Roches 2024 from Domaine Charles Joguet is a fresh and bright expression of Chenin Blanc, a cuvée that favours pure fruit and mineral vivacity. A white of crystalline freshness, chalky minerality and dazzling youth, deliciously taut and luminous, recalling a green apple picked from a lemon tree.
Terroir and vines
A splendid plot of more than two hectares at Anché, on the left bank of the Vienne, planted with Chenin Blanc between 1994 and 1999 on a clay limestone soil, rare and exceptional for the variety. The average yield is 35 hl/ha, sometimes less. The vines, certified organic, are harvested in several successive passes according to the ripeness of the grapes. Ageing takes place without wood, in stainless steel tanks, for about five months, allowing the Chenin to express its natural aromatic purity, crystalline vivacity and chalky minerality in full. 2024 is a vintage marked by extreme weather conditions, which called for precise vineyard management, and produces promising wines that reward patience.
Tasting profile
The colour is a pale yellow of brilliant clarity. The nose is fresh and luminous, with notes of green apple, lemon, white flower and chalk. On the palate the wine is juicy and crisp, lean and lively, with a crystalline tension, in a balance of pure fruit and mineral vivacity. The finish is fresh, mouthwatering and chalky. A wine of immediate pleasure, celebrating the radiant youth of the variety, which also lends itself to short term cellaring.
The estate
A pioneer of single plot Chinon, Domaine Charles Joguet has vinified each plot separately since the 1950s, convinced that distinct terroirs demand distinct vinification. Its thirty five hectares, thirty two in red, entirely Cabernet Franc, and three in white, Chenin, are arranged in a patchwork of plots that gives its wines remarkable variety. The estate is now run by winemaker Kevin Fontaine.
Food and wine pairing
This Chinon Blanc pairs well with shellfish, clams in a garlic and white wine broth, oily fish, poultry, vegetarian cooking or a mild soft cheese. Served at around 10 to 12 °C, it is best enjoyed now, for its freshness.
