Remarkable depth, marrying spice with profound red fruit, from Domaine Charles Audoin.
The Fixin Le Rozier 2023 from Domaine Charles Audoin is a Pinot Noir of remarkable elegance and precision, from a confidential lieu-dit within one of Burgundy's most authentic and underrated appellations. Hailed by James Suckling as "lithe and racy, with wonderful freshness, radical chalky-graphitic minerality and a long, straight finish", this wine from 70-year-old vines certified in organic agriculture embodies perfectly the identity of Domaine Charles Audoin, refinement, grace and absolute fidelity to terroir.
The terroir of Le Rozier
The lieu-dit Le Rozier sits south of Fixin, at the boundary with the hamlet of Couchey, on clay-limestone and marl soils typical of the Côte de Nuits foothills. The vines, planted in the 1960s and now over 60 years old, benefit from the appellation's characteristic exposure and this limestone and marl soil that gives wines density, character and an immediately recognisable chalky minerality. Fixin, pronounced "Fissin", is one of the Côte de Nuits' most northerly appellations, wedged between Marsannay to the north and the prestigious Gevrey-Chambertin to the south. Long overshadowed by more famous neighbours, it produces what Burgundians call "winter wines" — coloured, structured, often tannic in youth, but rounding beautifully with time to reveal a palette of great complexity, violet, peony, morello cherry, blackcurrant, spice and animal notes. The Premiers Crus of the village, tended by Cistercian monks from the Middle Ages onward, once rivalled the great Chambertin. Le Rozier, at village level, sits squarely in this tradition of excellence.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep ruby with violet glints, bright and clear. The nose is refined and expressive, bright with red and dark fruits, cherry, ripe raspberry, blackcurrant, lifted by floral notes of violet and peony, a light spice and chalky graphitic minerality that bears the stamp of the terroir's limestone. On the palate, the freshness is immediate and striking, driven by lively, well-integrated acidity that structures an elegant and supple substance. The tannins are fine and silky, the texture is silky and precise, and the long, straight finish lingers on persistent mineral and fruit notes. A wine bottled unfiltered and unglued to preserve the full integrity of fruit and terroir.
The domaine
Domaine Charles Audoin is one of the essential references in northern Côte de Nuits, widely recognised as the architect of Marsannay's reputation. Founded on carefully selected parcels in the 1970s by Charles Audoin, the domaine is today run by his son Cyril, fifth generation, who has carried on and deepened his father's demands. Organic certification was achieved in 2018, crowning work begun well before. Vinifications are traditional and restrained, with 25 per cent whole bunches, maceration of 14 to 18 days, ageing of 12 months in oak barrels of which 20 per cent are new, followed by six months in vat before bottling unfiltered and unglued. Refinement and elegance are the watchwords of this domaine that has made rigour and patience its signature.
Food pairings
This Fixin Le Rozier will pair beautifully with beef fillet with wild mushrooms, roast lamb with herbs, traditional coq au vin, rabbit braised with black olives or veal chop with truffle jus. It will also find fine harmony with soft-paste cheeses aged and complex, such as Époisses, Soumaintrain or Brillat-Savarin. Served between 15 and 17 °C, with light decanting advised in the first years, it will reveal all the precision and minerality of its Côte de Nuits terroir.
