A fine introduction to the Michel Couvreur house, this Scottish single malt gains depth and texture from its ageing in Burgundy in sherry casks.
Whisky Couvreur's Clearach stands apart in the landscape of malts matured in France, embodying the Michel Couvreur philosophy perfectly: a Scottish distillate shaped by a genuine culture of cask and ageing. Distilled in Scotland then refined in the cellars of Bouze-lès-Beaune, this single malt spends roughly three years in butts and half-butts that previously held Xérès wines, notably Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso, which brings immediate depth unusual for such a young whisky. It is bottled at 43%, non-chill-filtered, to preserve its full substance and aromatic character.
The nose opens on clear notes of almond, frangipane, malted cereal and dried fruit, lifted by herbal freshness and a honeyed undertone. The palate is lively yet without harshness, developing a pleasing richness with flavours of prune, almond, walnut and gentle spice, in a style that is young, honest and already well-rounded by the sherry wood. The whole keeps a fine tension and a clear reading of the malt, without heaviness.
Clearach is an excellent gateway into the Michel Couvreur world: an accessible whisky already expressive, where Burgundian ageing brings roundness, texture and an immediately recognisable identity. It will appeal to those who love smooth, gourmand malts marked by dried fruit, almond and the patina of sherry, whilst retaining energy. Serve neat, slightly aerated in the glass, or with a few drops of water to bring out its freshness and pastry-like character.
