A fine introduction to the Michel Couvreur house, a Scottish single malt shaped by Burgundian oak and sherry cask ageing.
A singular whisky in the landscape of malts aged in France, Couvreur's Clearach embodies the Michel Couvreur spirit perfectly: a Scottish distillate crafted with genuine understanding of cask and ageing. Distilled in Scotland then refined in the cellars of Bouze-lès-Beaune, this single malt spends around three years in butts and half-butts that once held Xérès wines, notably Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso, which lend it uncommon depth for such a young whisky. It is bottled at 43%, non-chill-filtered, to preserve all its substance and aromatic character.
The nose opens with frank notes of almond, frangipane, malted cereal and dried fruits, lifted by herbal freshness and a honeyed nuance. The palate is lively but without harshness, developing fine richness, with flavours of prune, almond, walnut and soft spices, in a style both youthful, honest and already well-enveloped by sherry oak. The whole retains good tension and a clear expression of malt, without heaviness.
Clearach is a very fine doorway into the Michel Couvreur world: an accessible whisky already quite expressive, where Burgundian ageing brings roundness, texture and an immediately recognisable identity. It will appeal to lovers of supple, generous malts marked by dried fruit, almond and the patina of sherry, while retaining energy. Serve neat, gently aerated in the glass, or with a few drops of water to bring out its freshness and pastry-like register.
