An elegant Nuits with remarkable depth of dark fruits and supple tannins, built for the cellar.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Chaignots Cuvée Joseph 2022 from Cyprien Arlaud is one of the most compelling and historically resonant cuvées in the négociant range — a confidential bottling of just 800 cases annually, named as a sincere and moving tribute to Joseph Arlaud, founder of the family domaine in 1942. In the 2022 vintage, generous and sun-filled, unanimously praised across the Côte de Nuits for the richness and maturity of its fruit, this Premier Cru reveals remarkable fruited fullness and aromatic depth.

The terroir of Chaignots

The Domaine Arlaud story began in 1942 with the meeting of Renée Amiot, a Burgundian, and Joseph Arlaud, from Ardèche. Their marriage brought fine vineyards, which Joseph expanded from 1949 onwards, and in 1966 the family acquired a historic 14th-century location for ageing their wines. This historical bond between Joseph Arlaud and Nuits-Saint-Georges inspired the name of this cuvée. The Aux Chaignots climat sits at the northern edge of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, immediately bordering Vosne-Romanée, on an east to south-east facing slope with soils of argillaceous marl over a limestone base. This northern position gives Chaignots an elegance and floral finesse that sets them apart from the more powerful, more tannic Premier Crus of the appellation's centre and south. Harvest, vinification and ageing follow the same exacting standards as those of the domaine itself. The domaine team oversees everything from pruning to harvest, biodynamic principles are applied throughout, with green harvesting and hand-destemming. Ageing in oak for 14 to 18 months with racking, using 25% new barrels. Bottled at the domaine without fining or filtration, according to the lunar calendar.

Tasting profile

The 2022 vintage, generous and precocious, imprints remarkable fruited richness and maturity on this cuvée, reinforcing the naturally full and fleshy character of Nuits-Saint-Georges. On the nose, an expressive bouquet of ripe, generous fresh fruits, floral nuances and a hint of blonde tobacco, the signature of Chaignots. The concentration of the vintage brings depth and density that elegantly frame this characteristic note. On the palate, the wine is powerful, complex, well-balanced, robust and round — built for ageing, as its succulent texture attests. The tannins are present and beautifully mature, with a melting, enveloping texture born of the vintage's generosity. The characteristic blonde tobacco note of Chaignots sits perfectly integrated in a palate of remarkable complexity and richness, carried by bright acidity that promises magnificent evolution over ten to fifteen years.

The domaine

Cyprien Arlaud represents the third generation of Domaine Arlaud. In 2013, he succeeded his father Hervé and has conducted the domaine in biodynamics since 2009, becoming the first domaine certified Biodyvin in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2014. Today, Domaine Arlaud spans 19 appellations including four Grands Crus: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares. His passion for Burgundian terroirs in all their diversity led him from 2012 to develop a négociant business under the Cyprien Arlaud label, where his team tends the vines from pruning to harvest with the same biodynamic rigour as the family domaine. Cuvée Joseph is the most personal and moving of these négociant cuvées, a double tribute to the domaine's founder and to the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges where Joseph Arlaud established his historic cellars.

Food pairings

This Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Chaignots Cuvée Joseph 2022 will pair beautifully with venison haunch, veal sweetbreads with morels, Bresse chicken with chanterelles, beef fillet with black truffle jus, or game birds such as partridge with cabbage. It will also harmonise well with mature cheeses such as Époisses or aged Comté. Decanting for at least an hour is recommended. Served between 16 and 17°C, it will reveal all the generosity, complexity and depth of a Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru in one of its richest and most expressive vintages.
