Red and dark fruits, spices and the minerality characteristic of Nuits. A fleshy, structured Premier Cru with tight tannins and a persistent finish.
The Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots Cuvée Joseph 2023 from Cyprien Arlaud is one of the most touching and historically rich cuvées in the entire négociant range, a confidential bottle of just 800 examples annually, named as a sincere and moving tribute to Joseph Arlaud, founder of the family domaine in 1942. This cuvée was created to honour Joseph Arlaud, who established Domaine Arlaud. With production around 800 bottles, this Premier Cru is a true rarity of the appellation. A powerful, complex Premier Cru built for ageing, vinified with the same biodynamic rigour as all the domaine's wines.
The terroir of Chaignots
Domaine Arlaud's origins date to 1942, when a Burgundian woman, Renée Amiot, met Joseph Arlaud, from the Ardèche. Their marriage dowry included fine vineyards, which Joseph expanded from 1949. In 1966, they acquired a historic 14th-century location for wine ageing. This historical bond between Joseph Arlaud and Nuits-Saint-Georges is precisely what inspired the name of this cuvée. The climat Aux Chaignots is located at the northern edge of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, immediately bordering Vosne-Romanée, on an east to south-east facing hillside with soils of argillaceous marl over a limestone foundation. This northern position is crucial: it gives Chaignots an elegance and floral finesse that clearly distinguish it from the Premier Crus of the centre or south of the appellation, which are more powerful and tannic. Harvesting, vinification and ageing are carried out with the same rigour as at the domaine. The domaine team handles all tasks, from pruning to harvest. As with domaine wines, biodynamic principles are followed. Green harvesting and manual leaf-removal. Ageing in oak barrels for 14 to 18 months, with racking in air during ageing. Twenty-five percent new oak. Bottled at the domaine without fining or filtration, according to lunar cycles.
Tasting profile
On the nose, it reveals an expressive bouquet where you find fresh fruit, floral nuances and a hint of blonde tobacco, the typical signature of Chaignots. On the palate, it charms through its perfect balance and elegance. This Nuits-Saint-Georges touches us through the purity and depth of its aromas. A festival of fruits and spices that answer each other harmoniously, while preserving the sublime rusticity typical of wines from the appellation. Patience is required for this powerful, complex, well-balanced, robust and rounded Premier Cru. It is built for ageing, as its juicy palate testifies. The hint of blonde tobacco that characterises Chaignots is here perfectly integrated into an aromatic palette of remarkable complexity and generosity, carried by silky tannins and fresh acidity that promise magnificent evolution over ten to fifteen years.
The domaine
Cyprien Arlaud represents the third generation of Domaine Arlaud. In 2013, Cyprien Arlaud succeeded his father Hervé at the head of the domaine. Keen to push further in ecological practice, he enabled the domaine to become in 2014 the first domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis certified in biodynamics. Today, Domaine Arlaud comprises 19 appellations including 4 Grands Crus: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin and Bonnes-Mares. His passion for Burgundy's exceptional terroirs, in all their diversity, led him from 2012 to develop new wines from grape purchases, presented under the Cyprien Arlaud label. Cuvée Joseph is the most personal and moving of these négociant cuvées, a double tribute to the domaine's founder and to the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges where Joseph Arlaud had established his historic cellars.
Food pairings
This Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Chaignots Cuvée Joseph will pair beautifully with venison haunch, veal sweetbreads with morels, Bresse chicken with chanterelles, beef fillet with black truffle jus, or game birds such as partridge with cabbage. It will also find fine harmony with aged cheeses such as Époisses or old Comté. Decanting for a minimum of one hour is advised in its youth. Served between 16 and 17 °C, it will reveal all the complexity, elegant rusticity and depth of a Premier Cru from Nuits-Saint-Georges vinified in homage to a founder.
